Jibei Island Introduction
Jibei Island has a total area of approximately 3.1 square kilometers and a coastline of about 13 kilometers, making it the largest island in the North Sea and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The terrain of the island is higher in the east and lower in the west, featuring beautiful beaches and sandbars formed by marine sediment, which are the island's most significant geographical characteristics. The beach is located in the southwest of the island and extends southward from Xikanshan; at the end of the beach, a sandbar, influenced by ocean currents, extends into the sea, approximately 800 meters long and about 200 meters wide at its widest point. Surrounding the island, many small and large stone traps were artificially dispersed, with over two hundred during its peak, but only 88 remain today. The island is about 5 nautical miles from Chikan, with a sailing time of around 20 minutes. Jibei Island is not only one of the fishing grounds in the northern part of Penghu but also features a considerable tidal range and a vast intertidal zone. Early settlers observed fish ecology and utilized the tidal differences to catch fish, building stone traps from local basalt and coral reefs during low tide. Records show that during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, when the "trap tax" was collected, Jibei had one large and four small traps, indicating that stone trap construction predates the Qianlong era. The waters around Jibei are densely populated with stone traps, and the remaining 88 traps account for nearly one-seventh of the more than 580 traps in the entire county. During low tide, one can wade from a local area called Stingray Bay to the sandbar to the northwest. The coastal stone traps on both sides of Stingray Bay are concentrated, making up about half of the traps on Jibei (around 40). This kind of fishing trap built from basalt by residents utilizing the intertidal zone is a unique cultural landscape of Jibei Island. A popular scenic spot is Jibei Sandbar, the location where Ze Ya (played by Xu Shao Yang) meets Yi Tian Bian (played by Zhang Shao Han) in the hit TV idol drama "Dolphin Bay Lovers." "Have you heard the legend of the dolphins? According to legend, dolphins once helped a pair of separated lovers reunite by carrying a steel ring, becoming the guardian of love! In the Dolphin Bay of Tian Bian, there is a story of love and legend!" When the drama aired, it attracted many fans to this location. The boat house where Yi Tian Bian and Xu Ze Ya meet for the first time when they grow up, Yi Tian Bian's family's noodle shop, and the Dolphin Bay bus stop are all focal points captured by fans' cameras.
