Xiyu Pingyu Introduction
Xiyu Pingyu, the westernmost of the Nanfang Islands, is about a 25-minute journey from Wangan and is closely connected to Dongyu Pingyu. The two islands are collectively referred to as "Ban Pingyu" or "Yuping." At the coastline, you can see the island's religious center, the Huaniang Temple, which worships the main deity Huaniang, along with other deities such as Wushui and Mazu. To reach the village, visitors must walk up a slope known as "Haohan Slope" from the pier, where numerous ancient houses made of coral stones and basalt can be seen, although most residents have now relocated. Xiyu Pingyu primarily features a quadrilateral mountainous terrain, with columnar basalt cliffs on the eastern side and a continuous series of sea cliffs on the western side. Erosion from the sea has shaped marine erosion grooves and caves in this area. The eastern and northern sides have basalt gravel beaches, and off the northeastern corner, there is an isolated sea stack known locally as "Diaozi." From the northwestern corner, Xiwang Mountain offers views of Tiezhanyu (Anvil Island) and Toujin Island, providing a stunning seascape. Xiyu Pingyu not only boasts a diverse landscape on land but also an exciting underwater world. The surrounding waters have a high coverage of coral species and vibrant colors, making it the area with the highest coral coverage among the Nanfang Islands. One can see large colonies of branching or table corals underwater, along with various marine life swimming among them, making it a site of significant conservation value and a paradise for snorkelers!
