Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Humen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu Islands. The water flows rapidly, with a reported speed of up to 3 meters per second, making it the second most treacherous current in Penghu waters. Every winter, when the northeast monsoon arrives, the waves become fierce and difficult for boats to navigate. Therefore, construction of the cross-sea bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to solve transportation difficulties between Wugong Island. Subsequently, due to severe corrosion and bridge collapse, the causeway was widened in 1984, and the two-lane new bridge was completed in 1996. From a distance, it resembles a long rainbow over the sea, not only possessing tourism value but also facilitating smooth transportation between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, early concrete pillars and frames remain in the northern sea area at the Xiyu end of the bridge, and weathered bridge piers are still visible on the Xiyu side, illustrating the history of how early electricity on Xiyu was transmitted across the sea via high-voltage power lines and the story of the old bridge's retirement. Dacang Island - A great place to admire the cross-sea bridge. Dacang Island is located in the inner sea surrounded by Magong, Baisha, and Xiyu, earning it the nickname "Pearl of the Inner Sea of Penghu." From Dacang, one can gaze at the cross-sea bridge like a long rainbow in the sky, with panoramic sea views. The boat journey from Magong Chongguangli (Hokou Pond) takes about 20 minutes. Dacang Island is the only inhabited island in the inner sea of Penghu, and the name Dacang may derive from the nearby famous fishing ground known for its "big fish storage" in earlier times. The coastline around Dacang Island is gentle, and during low tide, the intertidal zone is vast, with five large stone weirs being the most distinctive feature. Star-gazing information: The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a landmark of Penghu and one of the must-visit photo spots for tourists, capturing the words "Penghu" in photos to prove their visit is one of the tourists' top desires. Near the bridgehead at the Tongliang end, visitors can also enjoy the recommended cactus ice by renowned director Wu Nien-Jen, with its sweet and sour taste being unforgettable.
