Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge has a total length of 2,494 meters and spans the Hohmen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu Islands, where the water flow is swift, reportedly reaching speeds of 3 meters per second, making it the second most treacherous current in the Penghu waters. The raging waves during the winter northeast monsoon make navigation difficult, which led to the construction of the bridge starting in 1965 and its completion in 1970 to alleviate transportation difficulties between Wengong Island. Subsequently, due to severe bridge corrosion and collapses, the land embankment was widened in 1984, and the new two-lane bridge was completed and opened in 1996. Viewed from afar, the bridge resembles a rainbow over the sea, not only providing scenic value but also facilitating unobstructed traffic between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, remnants of early concrete pillars and frames remain in the northern waters at the Xiyu end of the bridge, and the weathered bridge piers on the Xiyu side tell a poignant story of how early electricity was transmitted across the sea via high-voltage power lines, marking the retirement of the old bridge. Dacang Islet - A Great Place to Appreciate the Cross-Sea Bridge Dacang Islet is located in the inner sea surrounded by Magong, Baisha, and Xiyu Islands in Penghu and is known as the "Pearl of the Inner Sea of Penghu." From Dacang, the Cross-Sea Bridge appears like a long rainbow in the sky, offering a panoramic view of the sea. The boat ride from Chongguang Village in Magong (Houkutai) takes about 20 minutes to reach. Dacang Islet is the only inhabited island in the inner sea of Penghu, and the name Dacang may derive from the nearby famous fishing ground in Penghu, historically referred to as "Daiyu Cang" (Big Fish Warehouse). The coastline around Dacang is gentle, with a wide intertidal zone during low tide, featuring five large stone weirs that are particularly distinctive. Star Spotting Information The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a landmark of Penghu and one of the must-visit photo spots for tourists. Capturing the words "Penghu" in photographs has long been a wish for visitors to prove they have visited Penghu. Near the bridge's terminal, one can also enjoy the famous cactus ice recommended by renowned director Wu Nien-Jen, whose sweet and sour flavor is unforgettable.
