Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge has a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Houmen Channel between Baisha and Xiyu Islands. The waters are known for their strong currents, with speeds reportedly reaching 3 meters per second, making it the second most dangerous flow in the waters around Penghu. During the winter northeast monsoon season, the waves become particularly turbulent, making navigation difficult. Thus, construction of the cross-sea bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to address the transportation challenges between Wugong Island and the mainland. Due to severe corrosion and the risk of structural collapse, the land dam was widened in 1984, and the new dual-lane bridge was completed in 1996. The bridge, resembling a long rainbow over the sea, is not only a tourist attraction but also facilitates smooth transportation between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, there are still early cement pillars and frames visible in the waters north of the bridge near Xiyu, along with weathered bridge piers on the Xiyu side, telling a tale of the early power supply to Xiyu via high-voltage cables across the sea, marking the history of the old bridge's retirement. Dacang Islet – A Great Spot to Appreciate the Cross-Sea Bridge Dacang Islet is nestled in the inner sea surrounded by the islands of Magong, Baisha, and Xiyu in Penghu, earning the nickname "Pearl of the Penghu Inner Sea." From Dacang, one can view the cross-sea bridge as if it were a long rainbow in the sky, with a panoramic sea view. The journey from Magong’s Chongguang Village (Houkoutan) takes about 20 minutes by boat. Dacang Islet is the only inhabited island in the Penghu inner sea; its name may originate from the nearby famous fishing ground known as the "Great Fish Warehouse." The coastline around Dacang is gentle, and during low tide, the intertidal zone is extensive, featuring five large tidal traps that are particularly distinctive. Star Catching Information The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a landmark of Penghu and one of the must-visit photo spots for travelers. Capturing the word "Penghu" in photographs is a top priority for visitors, proving their visit to the beautiful islands. Near the bridgehead of the Tongliang end, one can also enjoy the famous cactus ice, recommended by renowned director Wu Nian-Zhen, whose sweet and tangy flavor is unforgettable.
