Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge has a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Hohmen Channel between Baisha and Xiyu (also known as Fisherman Island). This area is famous for its turbulent waters, which can become especially chaotic during the winter northeastern monsoon, making navigation difficult. Construction of the bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to alleviate transportation challenges between Xiyu and Baisha. Due to severe corrosion and bridge collapses, the causeway was widened in 1984, and a new dual-lane bridge was completed in 1996. The bridge resembles a rainbow over the sea and not only has tourism value but also allows for smooth transportation between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, remnants of early concrete pillars and frames can be found in the northern waters near the Xiyu end of the bridge, along with weathered piers, indicating that early electricity on Xiyu was transmitted via high-voltage power lines across the sea, marking a poignant history of the old bridge's legacy.
