Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning between Baisha and Xiyu (Fisherman Island) across the turbulent Houmen Channel, known for its strong currents in the waters of Penghu. Every winter, with the arrival of the northeast monsoon, the waves become furious and sailing becomes difficult. Therefore, construction of the bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970, aiming to resolve transportation difficulties between Xiyu and Baisha. Later, due to severe corrosion and the collapse of the bridge, the causeway was widened in 1984, and a new two-lane bridge was completed and opened to traffic in 1996. Looking from a distance, it resembles a rainbow across the sea, not only possessing tourism value but also facilitating smooth transportation between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, remnants of early cement pillars and frameworks can still be seen in the waters on the northern side of the Xiyu end of the bridge, along with weathered piers on the Xiyu side. These features tell the story of how early electricity was transmitted to Xiyu via overhead high-voltage power lines, marking the poignant history of the old bridge's retirement.
