Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge has a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Houmen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu (also known as Fisherman's Island). The water flow is rapid and it is well-known for its dangerous currents in the Penghu waters. During the winter northeast monsoon, the waves become tumultuous, making navigation difficult. Therefore, the construction of the cross-sea bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to solve the transportation difficulties between Xiyu and Baisha. Due to severe corrosion and bridge collapse, the causeway was widened in 1984, and a new dual-lane bridge was completed and opened to traffic in 1996. From a distance, the bridge resembles a magnificent rainbow over the sea, which not only has tourism value but also facilitates smooth traffic between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, remnants of early cement pillars and frames remain in the waters on the northern side at the Xiyu end of the bridge, with weathered bridge piers on the Xiyu side, illustrating the history of early electricity transmission via high-voltage power lines across the sea and the retirement of the old bridge.
