Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge has a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Houmen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu (Yuweng Island), known for its rapid currents, making it a famed treacherous area in the waters of Penghu. During the winter northeast monsoon, the waves become tumultuous and difficult for navigation. Therefore, construction of the cross-sea bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to alleviate transportation difficulties between Xiyu and Baisha. Due to severe corrosion and bridge collapses, the embankment was widened in 1984, and a new dual-lane bridge was completed in 1996. The bridge resembles a rainbow across the sea and not only has tourism value but also ensures smooth transportation between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, the northern coastal area at the Xiyu end of the bridge still retains early concrete pillars and frames, along with weathered bridge piers on the Xiyu side, reflecting the history of early electricity supplied to Xiyu through high-voltage transmission lines across the sea and the story of the old bridge’s retirement.
