Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Hohmen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu Islands. The water flow is swift, reportedly reaching speeds of 3 meters per second, making it the second most dangerous current in the Penghu waters. During the winter months, the northeast monsoon creates turbulent waves, making navigation difficult. Therefore, construction of the bridge began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to resolve the transportation issues between Wang-an Island. Subsequently, due to severe corrosion and bridge collapses, the land causeway was widened in 1984, and the new two-lane bridge was completed in 1996. The bridge looks like a long rainbow over the sea, serving both a tourist value and allowing smooth traffic between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, early cement pillars and frames remain in the northern waters at the Xiyu end of the bridge, while weathered bridge piers can be seen on the Xiyu side, illustrating a history where early electricity on Xiyu was transmitted via high-voltage power lines across the sea, marking a saga of the old bridge's retirement. Dacang Island - A great place to admire the Cross-Sea Bridge. Dacang Island is located in the inner sea surrounded by the three islands of Magong, Baisha, and Xiyu, known as the "Pearl of the Inner Sea of Penghu." From Dacang, the Cross-Sea Bridge appears like a rainbow suspended in the air, offering an unobstructed view of the sea. The journey from Magong's Chongguangli (Houku Tan) by boat takes about 20 minutes to arrive. Dacang Island is the only inhabited island in the Penghu inner sea. The name "Dacang" may originate from a well-known fishing ground nearby, referred to as "Daiyu Cang" (Great Fish Warehouse) in earlier times. The surrounding coastline of Dacang Island is gentle, and during low tide, the intertidal zone is expansive, with five large stone weirs being the most distinctive feature. Stargazing Information: The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a landmark of Penghu and one of the must-visit photo spots for tourists. Capturing the word "Penghu" in photographs has always been one of tourists' top wishes, confirming their visit to Penghu. Near the bridge, visitors can also enjoy the famous cactus ice recommended by renowned director Wu Nien-jen, with its sour-sweet taste leaving a lasting impression.
