Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge has a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Hohmen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu Islands. The water flow is swift, reportedly reaching speeds of up to 3 meters per second, making it the second most dangerous current in the waters of Penghu. During the winter northeast monsoon, the waves can become furious, making navigation difficult. Therefore, construction of the cross-sea bridge started in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to solve the transportation problems between Qimei Island and the mainland. Later, due to severe corrosion and bridge collapses, the land causeway was widened in 1984 and completed in 1996 to become a new two-lane bridge. The bridge, resembling a rainbow over the sea, not only holds tourism value but also facilitates smooth traffic between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, remnants of early concrete pillars and frameworks can still be seen in the north sea area at the west end of the bridge, along with weathered bridge piers on the Xiyu side, which tell stories of the early high-voltage power lines crossing the sea to supply electricity to Xiyu, marking a poignant history of the old bridge's retirement. Dacun Island - A great place to admire the Cross-Sea Bridge Dacun Island is located in the inner sea surrounded by the islands of Magong, Baisha, and Xiyu in Penghu, and is known as the "Pearl of Penghu's Inner Sea." From Dacun, the Cross-Sea Bridge appears like a long rainbow in the sky, offering a panoramic view of the ocean. The boat journey from Magong Chongguangli (Houkutan) takes about 20 minutes. Dacun Island is the only inhabited island in Penghu's inner sea, and its name might come from its proximity to a famous fishing ground in the inner sea, known in early times as the "Great Fish Storage." The coastline around Dacun is gentle, with a broad intertidal zone at low tide, featuring five large stone fish traps, which are particularly distinctive. Star-spotting Information The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a landmark of Penghu and one of the must-visit photo spots for tourists. Capturing the name "Penghu" in photos is one of the top desires of visitors to prove they have been to Penghu. Near the bridgehead at Tongliang end, visitors can also enjoy the cactus ice recommended by famous director Wu Nian-Zhen, whose sweet and sour taste leaves a lasting impression.
