Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge Introduction
The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a total length of 2,494 meters, spanning the Houmen waterway between Baisha and Xiyu islands, where the water flows swiftly, reportedly reaching speeds of up to 3 meters per second, making it the second most treacherous current in the waters of Penghu. Each winter, when the northeast monsoon arrives, the waves become furious and navigation is difficult. Consequently, the construction of the cross-sea bridge began in 1965 and it was completed and opened to traffic in 1970 to resolve the transportation issues between Wugong Island and the mainland. Later, due to severe corrosion and bridge collapses, the land embankment was widened in 1984, and a new two-lane bridge was completed in 1996. From afar, it resembles a rainbow over the sea which not only has tourism value but also enables smooth transportation between Xiyu and Baisha. To this day, the northern area of the sea at the western end of the bridge still retains early concrete pillars and frames, and weathered bridge piers on the Xiyu side illustrate the history of early power transmission via high-voltage lines across the sea as the old bridge fades into history. Dacang Island – A great place to admire the Cross-Sea Bridge Dacang Island is located in the inner sea, surrounded by the islands of Magong, Baisha, and Xiyu, and is known as the "Pearl of the Inner Sea of Penghu." From Dacang, the cross-sea bridge appears like a long rainbow soaring in the sky, offering unobstructed views of the sea. The boat trip from Magong's Chongguang Village (Houkudan) takes about 20 minutes to reach Dacang Island, which is the only inhabited island in the inner sea of Penghu. The name Dacang may come from a nearby famous fishing ground in Penghu, known as "Big Fish Warehouse" in its early days. The surrounding coast of Dacang Island is gentle, with extensive intertidal zones during low tide, featuring five large stone traps as its most distinctive characteristic. Star-gazing information The Penghu Cross-Sea Bridge is a landmark of Penghu and is one of the must-visit photo spots for tourists in Penghu. Taking a photo with the words "Penghu" is among the top things visitors aspire to do to prove their visit to Penghu. Near the bridge's terminal, you can also enjoy the well-known cactus ice recommended by esteemed director Wu Nien-jen, whose sweet and sour flavor is unforgettable.
