Mandarin Duck Cave,藏軍洞 Introduction
"Mandarin Duck Playing in Water - Mandarin Duck Cave" is located in the northeast of Wangan Island. It is a natural valley terrain, named after the legend that many water caves in the area attracted mandarin ducks that played and resided here. Offshore, there is a saddle-shaped islet known as Saddle Mountain that serves as a barrier. During the Japanese colonial era, this area was developed by the Japanese military into an important naval base, with the "Cangjun Cave" being a remnant of that history. In 1944, the Japanese military enslaved the residents of Wangan and Jiangjun Islands to excavate the cave as a base for naval torpedo boats and quarters for special attack forces. Just as the construction was nearing completion, Japan announced its unconditional surrender, and the base was consequently abandoned. Many caves have since collapsed, but remnants of some structures can still be faintly seen.
