Hujing West Mountain Park Introduction
Hujing Island is divided into Dongshan and Xishan, with the village located in the flat area between the two mountains. Dongshan is currently a military restricted area and is not open to the public, while Xishan was transformed into Hujing Xishan Park after the military withdrawal. The most striking feature in Xishan Park is a large white marble statue of Guanyin and eighteen Arhats, each with distinct expressions. This Guanyin statue was donated by fellow villagers residing in Hong Kong and carved by a master from China. The expressions and the lines of the clothing are very vivid. Originally, the statue was so large that it could not be delivered directly, so it was shipped in three parts and reassembled in Hujing! During a stroll in Xishan Park, one may encounter many agave plants, which thrive in arid conditions and are quite adaptable, commonly seen in Penghu. However, the edges of agave leaves are very sharp, and in the past, they were even planted along the coastline for defensive purposes. Hujing is also famous for its three treasures: centipede wine, cactus juice, and fresh fish soup. Hujing is abundant in large red-footed centipedes, and it is said that centipede wine is quite effective in treating rheumatism and skin diseases. However, due to regulations under the Tobacco and Alcohol Management Act, homemade alcohol can only be for personal use, so the once-popular centipede wine is no longer available for purchase, but cactus juice and fresh fish soup can still be enjoyed!
