White Lighthouse Introduction
The White Lighthouse is located on the southern side of Liuqiu Island, at the summit on the west side of the Hou-shih Skirt Reef. It is an international lighthouse also known as the "White Lantern Tower." Built in 1929, the base to the top of the tower is about 10 meters, with an elevation of 88 meters from the sea level to the top. It is equipped with an automatic flashing light system that operates day and night, serving as a navigation indicator for fishing boats, similar to the Eluanbi Lighthouse in Kenting National Park. For enthusiasts who enjoy observing fireflies, this area is particularly suitable for firefly watching from the spring equinox to the end of autumn. When night falls, the grass piles on both sides of the lighthouse entrance are filled with a myriad of points of light underground, and the sky sparkles as the male and female Taiwanese fireflies busily flicker their lights, igniting the silence of midsummer. Meanwhile, the Formosan rock-monitors and brown tree skinks assertively cling to the neighboring banyan roots, sleeping boldly, showcasing their impressive skills, which brings a smile to onlookers.
