Mingtan Reservoir Introduction
Mingtan Reservoir is located in the valley of the Shui Li River at the boundary between Shui Li Township and Yu Chi Township, beside Highway 131. It was built using the terrain of the Shui Li River Valley to create a dam for storing the tailwater generated from Sun Moon Lake's hydropower. The Mingtan and Minghu Reservoirs located in Checheng Village are environmentally-friendly "pumped storage power plants," constructed for hydropower generation. The power plant utilizes elevation differences to perform pumped storage hydropower generation, which can adjust the supply of electricity during peak and off-peak times and produces no pollution. The lower dam of Mingtan Reservoir is a concrete gravity dam, and the reservoir has a crescent-shaped water area with a storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters, experiencing daily water level fluctuations of 28 meters, creating a unique tidal phenomenon in the lake. In the early morning, mist and clouds swirl around, creating a transcendently beautiful scene. The lake surface is situated below the highway, allowing visitors to experience the serene and tranquil qualities of the area, whether gazing down at the lake from the highway or visiting the lakeshore.
