Mingtan Reservoir Introduction
Mingtan Reservoir is located in the valley of Shui Li River at the boundary of Shui Li Township and Yu Chi Township, alongside Highway 131. It is an artificial lake built utilizing the terrain of the Shui Li River Valley to store the tailwater generated from Sun Moon Lake's hydropower. The Mingtan and Minghu Reservoirs in Checheng Village are environmentally friendly "pumped-storage power plants," constructed for hydropower generation. The power plant uses elevation to perform pumped-storage generation, which not only allows for adjustable power output during peak and off-peak times but also produces no pollution. The lower storage dam of Mingtan Reservoir is a concrete gravity dam, and the reservoir has a crescent-shaped water area with a storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters, experiencing a daily water level fluctuation of 28 meters, creating a unique tidal phenomenon in the lake. In the morning, the clouds and mist create a captivating and ethereal scene. The lake's surface lies below the highway, allowing for stunning views of the lake from above the road, or visitors can enjoy its tranquility by strolling along the lakeside, where they can deeply sense the serene and leisurely atmosphere of the clear mountains and pristine waters.
