Mingtan Reservoir Introduction
Mingtan Reservoir is located in the valley of Shuili Creek at the border of Shuili Township and Yuchi Township, beside Provincial Highway 131. It was constructed by utilizing the topography of the Shuili Creek valley to build a dam, serving as an artificial lake for storing the tailwater from Sun Moon Lake's hydroelectric power generation. Situated in Checheng Village, Mingtan and Minghu Reservoirs are environmentally friendly "pumped-storage power plants" designed for hydropower generation. The power plant utilizes elevation differences for pumped-storage generation, allowing for adjustable supply during peak and off-peak hours without pollution. The lower dam of Mingtan Reservoir is a concrete gravity dam, and the reservoir has a crescent-shaped body of water with a storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters, experiencing daily water level fluctuations of 28 meters, which creates a unique tidal phenomenon in the lake. In the morning light, the cloud mist dances around, presenting an ethereal and otherworldly scene. The lake surface lies below the highway, making it possible to appreciate the lake scenery from above or to visit the lakeside to deeply feel the tranquil and idyllic atmosphere of this beautiful place with clear mountains and waters.
