Niao Chian Pavilion Trail Introduction
The trail is under renovation, and it is expected to be closed until June 30, 2025 (tentative). The Niau Chhan Pavilion Trail is circular and built along the edge of the Dabang Village. It serves as a main route for the Tsou indigenous people to enter the mountains for hunting or gathering crops, teeming with wildlife. The trail often sees the "soothsayer bird," also known as the Japanese white-eye, circling and foraging. According to Tsou legend, before the tribe members would go hunting or on expeditions, they would listen for the first bird call in the local pavilion at dawn. If the sound was urgent, it represented ominous omens, and it was considered unwise to venture out. This practice of listening to bird calls for divination is a long-standing tradition among the Tsou, hence the name "Niau Chhan Pavilion Trail." The trail is situated at an elevation of over 1,100 meters, surrounded by lush trees and greenery. Strolling through it allows visitors to absorb the phytoncides from the forest. The elevation change is minimal, and the entire trail takes about forty minutes to complete, making it suitable for family outings. It also provides the opportunity to visit the nearby significant Dabang "Kuba" and the mysteriously colorful ritual houses.
