Beimen Salt Field, Reconstructed with a New Tourist Face Tainan City has two salt fields, Beimen and Qigu, which are distinctly different. Qigu Salt Field consists mainly of clay salt pans with the latest salt fields, while Beimen Salt Field is entirely composed of tile salt pans, housing Taiwan's oldest existing salt field (the Jingzijiao Salt Field opened in 1818). This salt field is located between the Jishuei River to the south and the Sanliao Bay River to the north. Due to its long history and the rich experience of salt workers, its salt quality is renowned across Taiwan. The development of the Qigu Salt Field, Anshun Salt Field, and Wushulin Salt Field all relied on the support of Beimen salt workers, making this area, like the Xincuo Salt Field, the original homeland of Taiwan's salt industry. In 2000, the new coastal expressway was built through the area, leading to an early closure of this salt field compared to others and causing significant damage to the salt field's landscape. Today, after being reconstructed as a tourist salt field, it retains its old charm while presenting a fresh new appearance.

Beimen Salt Field Introduction

Beimen Salt Field: Rebuilding a New Tourist Image. Tainan City has two salt fields, Beimen and Qigu, which are quite different from each other. Qigu Salt Field consists of clay salt pans and has the latest salt fields, while Beimen Salt Field is entirely composed of tile salt pans, including the oldest existing salt field in Taiwan (the Jingzijiao Salt Field established in 1818). This salt field is located between the Jiushui River to the south and the Sanliaowan River to the north. Due to its long history, the salt workers here have rich experience, producing salt that is renowned throughout Taiwan. The development of Qigu Salt Field, Anshun Salt Field, and Wushulin Salt Field all relied on the support of Beimen salt workers, making this area, like the Xincuo Salt Field, the origin of Taiwan's salt-producing regions. In 2000, the newly built coastal expressway cut through the salt field, leading to an earlier end of operations compared to other salt fields and causing severe damage to the scenic view of the salt pans. Today, after reconstruction into a tourist salt field, the old platform has taken on a completely new look.
