Beimen Salt Field: A New Tourist Facade Tainan City has two salt fields: Beimen and Qigu, each with its own characteristics. The Qigu Salt Field consists of clay salt ponds and features the newest salt fields, while the Beimen Salt Field is entirely made up of tiled salt ponds and is home to the oldest active salt field in Taiwan, the Jingzi Jiao Salt Field, established in 1818. This salt field is located between the Jishuei River to the south and the Sandiao Bay River to the north. Due to its long history, the salt workers possess substantial experience, and the quality of the salt produced here is renowned throughout Taiwan. The establishment of the Qigu Salt Field, Anshun Salt Field, and Wushulin Salt Field all relied on the support of Beimen salt workers, making this area, along with the Xincuo Salt Field, the origin of Taiwan's salt-producing region. In 2000, the construction of a newly established coastal expressway passing through the area led to an earlier cessation of operations compared to other salt fields and severely damaged the landscape of the salt fields. Today, after reconstruction into a tourist salt field, the old site has transformed into a fresh new appearance.

Beimen Salt Field (Beimen Old Chengzhou North Salt Field) Introduction

Beimen Salt Fields, Rebuilding a New Tourism Image. Tainan City has two salt fields, Beimen and Qigu, which are notably different. Qigu Salt Field consists mainly of soil-based salt pans and has the newest salt fields; Beimen Salt Field, on the other hand, features tile-based salt pans and is home to the oldest operational salt field in Taiwan (the Jingzijiao Salt Field established in 1818). This salt field is situated between the Jishui River to the south and the Sanliaowan River to the north. Due to its long history and the rich experience of salt workers, the quality of the salt produced here is renowned throughout Taiwan. The establishment of Qigu Salt Field, Anshun Salt Field, and Wushulin Salt Field heavily relied on the support from Beimen salt workers, making this area, like Xincuo Salt Field, the birthplace of salt production in Taiwan. In 2000, the new coastal expressway crossed through the area, not only causing an earlier closure compared to other salt fields but also severely damaging the scenic view of the salt fields. Now, after renovations to transform it into a tourist-friendly salt field, it has regained its charm and presents a brand new appearance.
