Beimen Salt Field: A New Look for Tourism Tainan City has two salt fields, Beimen and Qigu, which are distinctly different. Qigu Salt Field consists of soil accumulative salt pans with the latest salt fields, while Beimen Salt Field is composed entirely of tiled salt pans, featuring the oldest operational salt field in Taiwan, the Jingzai Jiao Salt Field (established in 1818). This salt field is located between Jishui River to the south and Sanliao Bay River to the north. Due to its long history, the salt workers here are experienced, and the quality of salt produced is regarded as the best in Taiwan. The development of Qigu Salt Field, Anshun Salt Field, and Wushulin Salt Field all relied on the support of Beimen salt workers, making this area, along with the Xincuo Salt Field, the origin of Taiwan's salt-producing region. In 2000, the newly constructed coastal expressway passed through the area, which not only caused this salt field to end its operations earlier than others but also severely damaged the salt field's scenery. Today, after being renovated into a tourist salt field, the old site still feels new and has a fresh appearance.

Beimen Salt Fields Introduction

Beimen Salt Field has been renovated to present a new tourist landscape. Tainan City is home to two salt fields: Beimen and Qigu, which are distinctly different. Qigu Salt Field consists of earthen salt flats with the latest saltpans, while Beimen Salt Field features tile salt flats, housing Taiwan's oldest existing salt field (the Jingzai Jiao Salt Field established in 1818). This salt field is located between the southern part of Jushuikeng River and the northern part of Sanliaowan River. Due to its long history, the local salt workers have rich experience, and the quality of the salt produced here is renowned throughout Taiwan. The establishment of Qigu, Anshun, and Wushulin Salt Fields all relied on the support of Beimen salt workers, making this area, along with Xincuo Salt Field, the original home of Taiwan's salt industry. In 2000, the newly constructed coastal expressway passed through the area, leading to an early closure of this salt field compared to others and causing significant damage to the scenic views of the salt flats. However, after being renovated into a tourist salt field, it has retained its historic essence while presenting a brand new appearance.
