Xu Wu Flood Detention Basin Introduction
The Xuwei Flood Control Reservoir, known as the "Wuli (Little Sun Moon Lake) of Yunlin," is famous for its ecological islands and stunning lake views. A scenic path and bike trails are set along the lake, allowing visitors to choose between walking or cycling. Pavilions and observation decks are located along the lakeside route, providing places for visitors to rest, enjoy the scenery, and observe birds. Additionally, floating docks in the water offer panoramic views, allowing visitors to appreciate the wetland landscapes up close from the water, fully enjoying the natural beauty of the flood control reservoir. Cycling is the best way to explore the picturesque wetlands and ecological islands. The Xuwei Flood Control Reservoir features a bike path along the top of the embankment, circling this beautiful water area. Along the way, cyclists can enjoy spectacular lake views and charming ecological islands, savoring the tranquility and elegance of nature. If visitors cannot bring their bikes, they can rent them for free at the Kouhu Visitor Center near the Xuwei Flood Control Reservoir, making it easy to start a lakeside tour. The scenic beauty of the lake and the functional landscape of the flood control reservoir are noteworthy. The site of the Xuwei Flood Control Reservoir was originally a sugarcane plantation belonging to Taiwan Sugar Corporation, which was inundated by seawater due to a typhoon and has remained flooded for years. The submerged forest has now transformed into the lake wetlands seen today. The flood control reservoir is divided into northern and southern pools, serving not only as a beautiful natural wetland but also as a facility to regulate floodwaters, reducing flooding disasters in coastal areas. Recent efforts have led to the establishment of the Kouhu Visitor Center, integrating resources and local strengths with sustainable thinking, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and achieving mutual benefits. These initiatives embody the principles of destination management, cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability promoted by the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Management Office. In 2023, the office received its third GD Global Top 100 Destination Sustainability Stories award for the project "Dancing with Water - The Wetland that Resurged After the Typhoon" in Xuwei Wetland, Kouhu Township, Yunlin County. In 2024, the sustainable action "Returning Land to Water, Dancing with Water" in Kouhu was nominated again for the Green Destinations Story Awards at ITB Berlin, winning first place in the "Nature and Landscape" category!
