Nanjing Sugar Factory Leisure Plaza Introduction
After World War II, sugar was one of Taiwan's main industries and a significant export product. The climate and soil in the Chiayi area are very suitable for growing sugarcane, which is why the Nanjing Sugar Factory, one of the three major sugar factories at the time, was established in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County. Founded by the Toyo Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in 1908, it had a sugar production factory that could process 3,200 metric tons of sugarcane daily, producing 20,000 metric tons of special grade sugar annually. With the booming sugar industry, Shuishang once flourished; unfortunately, when the sugar industry declined, its glory faded away. As sugar production lost its market competitiveness, the Nanjing Sugar Factory actively transformed and is now developing in a diversified direction. In addition to its original "sugarcane sugar production" and "pig farming" businesses transitioning towards mechanized farming and dedicated management, it has developed multiple transformation projects, among which the operation of the Phalaenopsis orchid industry has established an excellent reputation internationally. The sugar factory's park has planned a modern leisure market that sells Taiwan Sugar products. The factory's zigzag ice is diverse, delicious, and affordable, often attracting many visitors, making the market bustling with activity. Next to the market, there is also a flower exhibition area and a children's recreational area, providing tourists with a variety of options. The sugar factory leisure plaza also features displays of old locomotives, retired military vehicles, and aircraft, along with a barbecue area for public recreation, and a childhood tunnel for children to explore. Located directly across from Nanjing Railway Station, the convenient Nanjing Sugar Factory offers not only the chance to taste frozen treats but also a deep appreciation of its historical transformation, with its shady trees, old buildings, and sugarcane carts presenting a nostalgic charm.
