Tropic of Cancer Astronomy Plaza Introduction
The Beishan Astronomical Plaza in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County, is one of the global parks where the Tropic of Cancer passes, making it the largest in Taiwan, which is also the largest island located on the Tropic of Cancer. The park includes the Entrance Solar Square, the Eight Major Planets Water Play Area, Time Trail, Green Tunnel, Constellation Area, Ancient Astronomy Trail, Ancient Astronomy Area, Historical Marker Exhibition Area, Tropic of Cancer Solar Pavilion, and Tropic of Cancer Imagery Marker. It features representative planting species from tropical and subtropical regions, and the clear demarcation of tropical and subtropical imagery markers along provincial highways presents a complete and clear depiction of the astronomical and geographical symbolism of the Tropic of Cancer. The sixth-generation landmark, the Solar Pavilion, has an architectural design resembling a space shuttle and serves as an astronomical theme pavilion. It consists of five floors: the first floor is an astronomy education center; the second, third, and fourth floors are planned as astronomy classrooms; the fifth floor is a solar-themed exhibition hall, along with a viewing platform and observation area for visitors to enjoy the scenery of the entire park. It is open to the public and free of charge. The Ancient Astronomy Area features a solar observation tube and an astrolabe, among other ancient astronomical instruments. The solar observation tube operates on the principle of a gnomon, allowing sunlight to penetrate through the tube onto a table to indicate whether the sun is directly overhead. At noon on the summer solstice, it can confirm the sun's position at the zenith. The astrolabe uses shadow casting; by standing on the date marked by the gnomon's line, one can determine the approximate time from the shadow. The Eight Major Planets Water Play Area features scaled models of the planets, providing related information and locations, along with several water pumps that entertain many children and adults alike. Adjacent to Provincial Highway 1 and in close proximity to Shuishang Airport and Chiayi City, the Tropic of Cancer Astronomical Plaza serves as a great recreational spot for the public, suitable for families and friends to enjoy together.
