Tropic of Cancer Astronomical Plaza Introduction
The Beihai Astronomical Plaza in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County, is one of the 16 cities worldwide through which the Tropic of Cancer passes, and it is the largest of its kind in Taiwan, which is the biggest island on the Tropic of Cancer. The park features several attractions including the Solar Plaza entrance, the Eight Planets Water Play Area, the Time Track, the Green Tunnel, the Constellation Area, the Ancient Astronomy Trail, the Ancient Astronomy Area, the Display Area of Historical Markers, the Solar Museum of the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of Cancer Imagery Markers. Additionally, it showcases representative tropical and subtropical plant species, with clear demarcations of the tropical and subtropical zones along the provincial highway, effectively illustrating the astronomical and geographical symbolism of the Tropic of Cancer. The Solar Museum, the sixth-generation landmark along the Tropic of Cancer, features an architectural design resembling a space shuttle, while the interior is an astronomical-themed exhibition hall. Currently, it comprises five floors, with the first floor serving as an astronomical education center; the second, third, and fourth floors are planned as astronomy classrooms; and the fifth floor is designated as the Solar Themed Exhibition Hall, which includes an observation deck and lookout area for visitors to enjoy the scenery of the entire park. It is open to the public free of charge. The Ancient Astronomy Area is equipped with sun observation tubes and a figure-eight sundial, which are instruments of ancient astronomical knowledge. The vertically installed sun observation tube utilizes the principle of a gnomon to determine whether the sun is directly overhead based on sunlight passing through the tube onto the table. At noon on the summer solstice, one can confirm that the sun is at its zenith. The figure-eight sundial indicates the approximate time based on the position of the shadow when standing on the date marked on the figure-eight line. The Eight Planets Water Play Area uses scaled models of the planets, providing relevant information and locations, as well as multiple water pumps, allowing many children and adults to have a great time. The Beihai Astronomical Plaza is conveniently located adjacent to Provincial Highway 1 and is close to Shuishang Airport and Chiayi City, making it a great spot for relaxation, suitable for family gatherings or outings with friends.
