Dongyu Lighthouse Introduction

One of the most attractive features of Dongyin is its sunrise. Whether it's loving couples, spouses, or families, everyone gathers at the best spot to admire the sunrise in front of the Dongyong Lighthouse, welcoming a beautiful day. Watching the sun slowly rise fills the heart with an indescribable emotion! The Dongyong Lighthouse is located on the hillside of Shiwei Mountain on Dongyin Island, characterized by its pure white structure with a round blue dome, standing 13 meters tall next to a cliff. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Treaty of Shimonoseki designated Mawei as a commercial port, and to guide ships coming and going, this lighthouse was designed and built by a British engineer. It is one of the few British-style buildings in the Matsu archipelago. In 1988, it was designated as a national third-class historical site by the National Cultural Heritage Administration, making it the northernmost historical site in the Taiwan Strait region. In the early days, the lighthouse was in a controlled area, and lighthouse keepers had to live with their families inside the lighthouse. To provide food for the staff, chicken coops and pigsties were established. In times of scarce resources, people outside the tower envied the lighthouse keepers and referred to this place as "Dongyin Villa." At the edge of the cliff below the lighthouse, there are two fog cannons, with an additional fog horn installed to assist navigation. Facing the East China Sea, the white tower stands on the edge of the cliff, beautifully contrasting with the deep blue sea below, making it especially captivating for visitors. Following the low white cement railing, one can easily find this lighthouse.
