Dongyung Lighthouse Introduction
One of the most captivating aspects of Dongyin is undoubtedly its sunrise. Whether it's a loving couple, married partners, or families, everyone gathers at the best location to enjoy the sunrise—right in front of the Dongyong Lighthouse—to welcome a beautiful day. Watching the sun gradually rise evokes emotions that words can hardly describe! The Dongyong Lighthouse is located on the hillside of Shiwai Mountain on Dongyin Island, standing at 13 meters tall, with its pure white body and round blue dome rising beside a cliff. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Treaty of Shimonoseki established Mawei as a trading port, and to guide passing ships, this lighthouse was designed and built by a British engineer. It is also one of the few examples of British-style architecture in the Matsu archipelago. In 1988, it was designated as a national third-class historic monument, making it the northernmost historic site in the Taiwan-Fujian region. In the early days, the lighthouse was located in a restricted area, and the lighthouse keeper had to live there with his family. To supply food for the staff, chicken coops and pigpens were established, and during times of scarcity, those outside the tower envied the lighthouse keeper, calling this place "Dongyin Villa." At the base of the lighthouse, there are two fog cannons, and one foghorn has now been installed to replace the fog cannons for navigation assistance. Facing the East China Sea, the white tower rises majestically on the cliff, creating a stunning contrast with the deep blue sea below, making it exceptionally captivating. Visitors can find this lighthouse by following the winding path along the low white concrete railing.
