Dongyung Lighthouse Introduction

One of the most attractive features of Dongyin is undoubtedly its sunrise. Whether it's a loving couple, a married pair, or families, everyone gathers in the best spot to admire the sunrise at the Dongyong Lighthouse, welcoming the arrival of a beautiful day together. Watching the sun slowly rise evokes emotions that are perhaps beyond words! The Dongyong Lighthouse is located on the hillside of Shiwai Mountain on Dongyin Island, standing at 13 meters tall with its pure white structure and round blue top, towering next to a cliff. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Treaty of Shimonoseki established Mawei as a commercial port. To guide ships back and forth, this lighthouse was designed and built by a British engineer, making it one of the few British-style buildings in the Matsu archipelago. In 1988, it was designated as a national heritage site of level three by the Council for Cultural Affairs and is the northernmost heritage site in the Taiwan-Fujian region. In the early days, the lighthouse was located in a controlled area, and keepers had to live with their families inside the lighthouse. To supply food for the staff, chicken coops and pigsty were established. In those times of scarcity, people outside the tower envied the keepers inside, referring to this place as "Dongyin Villa." At the edge of the cliff below the lighthouse, there were originally two fog cannons, which have now been replaced by one fog horn to assist navigation. Facing the East China Sea, the white tower stands majestically on the cliff, reflecting beautifully against the deep blue waters below. Visitors can find this lighthouse by following the winding path along the low white cement railing.
