Dongyong Lighthouse Introduction

One of the most attractive features of Dongyin is undoubtedly its sunrise. Whether it’s couples, spouses, or families, everyone gathers at the best spot to appreciate the sunrise - in front of the Dongyong Lighthouse - to welcome a beautiful day. Watching the sun slowly rise, the emotional impact is beyond words! The Dongyong Lighthouse is located on the hillside of Shihwei Mountain on Dongyin Island. Its pure white structure, combined with a round blue top, stands 13 meters tall beside a cliff. During the Guangxu period, the Treaty of Shimonoseki designated Matsu as a trading port, and in order to guide incoming and outgoing ships, this lighthouse was designed and built by a British engineer. It is also one of the few British-style buildings in the Matsu archipelago. In 1988, it was designated as a national third-level historical site by the Council for Cultural Affairs, making it the northernmost historical site in the Taiwan-Fujian region. In the early days, the lighthouse was located in a controlled area, and the lighthouse keeper had to live with their family inside the lighthouse. To supply food for the staff, chicken coops and pigsties were established. During times of scarcity, those outside the tower envied the lighthouse keepers inside and referred to the area as "Dongyin Villa." Below the lighthouse on the cliff, there are two fog guns and a foghorn has been added to replace the fog guns for navigation assistance. Facing the East China Sea, the white tower stands prominently on the cliff, reflecting beautifully with the deep blue sea below, making it an exceptionally captivating sight. Visitors can find this lighthouse by winding their way up along the low white concrete railing.
