Dongyong Lighthouse Introduction

One of the most attractive places in Dongyin is its sunrise. Whether it's for loving couples, spouses, or families, everyone can welcome the arrival of a beautiful day together at the best spot to admire the sunrise—before the Dongyong Lighthouse. Watching the sun slowly rise, the feeling in your heart is something that words can hardly describe! The Dongyong Lighthouse is located on the hillside of Shiwai Mountain on Dongyin Island. With its pure white structure and round blue dome, it stands at 13 meters tall beside the cliff. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Treaty of Maguan established Matsu as a trading port. To guide ships, this lighthouse was designed and built by a British engineer, making it a rare example of British architectural style in the Matsu Islands. In 1988, it was designated as a national third-level historic site by the National Cultural Heritage Commission, and it is the northernmost historic site in the Taiwan-Fujian region. In the early days, the lighthouse was located in a controlled area, so the lighthouse keeper had to live there with their family. To supply food for the staff, chicken coops and pigsties were set up. During times of scarcity, people outside the tower envied the lighthouse keepers inside and referred to this place as the "Dongyin Villa." Below the lighthouse, there are two fog guns, and now a fog horn has been added to replace the fog guns for navigational assistance. Facing the East China Sea, the white tower stands tall on the cliff, reflecting beautifully against the deep blue sea below, making it exceptionally captivating. Visitors can find the lighthouse by following the winding path along the low white concrete railing.
