Cheng Cheng-kung Shrine Introduction
Ascending the steps brings back nostalgic feelings. Before the completion of Zhongzhuharbor, Zhōngchéng Gate was the gateway to Dongyin Island, serving as a vital passage for the military and civilians as well as for the loading and unloading of fish catches. Now it has lost its original function. Zhōngchéng Gate is a semi-circular building reminiscent of ancient city walls, located at the entrance of Nanao, Dongyin Island. Large characters in red and white on either side of the gate read "Pursue Law and Practicality, Diligence and Simplicity." A statue of a soldier holding a gun on top of the city wall portrays a valiant stance, reflecting the historical atmosphere of Dongyin during wartime. Passing through the gate and ascending the steps, one arrives at the once-bustling "Zhonglu," which refers to the commercial area built against the mountains—Zhongliu Village and Lehua Village. This area retains many traditional Min Dong residences, constructed with granite, solid and simple, resembling "the wartime Jiufen," and is a great spot to overlook Zhongzhuharbor beside the statue atop the gate. Located in the left rear of Zhōngchéng Gate, the Tianhou Temple has been said to be established during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty and is one of the important centers of faith for the local residents. The indomitable soldier of Dongyin. On Zhōngchéng Gate stands a statue of a soldier, built around 1974, which has been guarding the post for over 40 years. Inspired by a military recruitment advertisement, it is named "A-Rong" and symbolizes the spirit of the military and civilians in Dongyin. It is also a must-visit spot for many veterans revisiting the old site.
