Zhongcheng Gate Introduction
The Loyalty Gate, standing as the gateway to Dongyin Island before the completion of Zhongzhu Harbor, was once a vital passage for the military and fishermen of Dongyin. Today, it has lost its original function. The gate is designed in an ancient-style semi-circular structure, located at the entrance of the coastal area in Nan'ao, Dongyin Island. On both sides of the gate tower, there are eight large characters in white on a red background that read "Practicing Law and Practicality, Diligent and Frugal." Atop the gate stands a statue of a soldier holding a rifle, embodying a heroic posture that reflects the historical atmosphere of Dongyin's past as a battlefield. Passing through the gate and ascending the steps leads to "Zhonglu," a once-thriving area of the island, known for its proximity to the mountains, comprising the bustling villages of Zhongliu and Lehua. This area retains many traditional Minnan-style residences, built with granite, imparting a rustic and solid charm reminiscent of "the Jiufen of the battlefield." Climbing up the gate offers a great vantage point to overlook Zhongzhu Harbor beside the statue. Behind the Loyalty Gate to the left stands the Matsu Temple, which is said to have been built during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty and is one of the important centers of faith for the local residents. The Everlasting Soldier of Dongyin On the Loyalty Gate sits a statue of a soldier, known as "A-Rong," built around 1974. Having served for over 40 years, he still stands guard today. Inspired by a military recruitment advertisement, A-Rong has become a spiritual symbol for the military and citizens of Dongyin, making him a must-visit site for many veterans returning to familiar grounds.
