Chung Cheng Gate Introduction
Climbing the steps, one reminisces about the past. Before the completion of Zhongzhu Harbor, Zhongcheng Gate served as the gateway to Dongyin Island, a crucial passage for military personnel and fishermen of the past. It has now lost its original function. Zhongcheng Gate is a half-circular building styled in ancient architecture, located at the entrance to the coastal area of South Ao on Dongyin Island. On both sides of the gate tower, there are eight large characters in white on red background that read “Practice the Law, Be Practical; Work Hard, Live Simply.” On top of the city wall, there is a statue of a soldier holding a gun, presenting a valiant stance that reflects the historical atmosphere of Dongyin being a war zone in the past. Passing through the gate and climbing the steps, one arrives at the once-bustling "Zhonglu," the commercial area of Dongyin built against the mountains—Zhongliu Village and Lehua Village. This area preserves many traditional East Min residences made of granite, sturdy and unpretentious, resembling the charm of "War-Territory Jiufen." Climbing up the gate offers a great vantage point to overlook Zhongzhu Harbor next to the statue; situated to the left and behind Zhongcheng Gate is the Dongyin Ma-Tzu Temple, which is said to have been constructed during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, serving as an important center of faith for the local residents. The Soldier of Dongyin Never Retires. Above Zhongcheng Gate stands a statue of a soldier built around 1974, which has served for over 40 years and still holds its post today. Inspired by a military recruitment advertisement, it is named "A-Rong," symbolizing the shared spirit of Dongyin’s military and civilians and is a must-visit place for many veterans returning to their old haunts.
