Wu Sha Former Residence Introduction
Wu Sha was an important contributor to the development of Yilan. During the time when Yilan was still wild and undeveloped, Wu Sha led Han settlers from Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, and Guangdong to cultivate the land. Initially, there were frequent conflicts with the Kavalan people, but when smallpox epidemics broke out, Wu Sha helped them with medicine, earning their gratitude. This led to a peaceful coexistence, laying the foundation for the opening of Yilan, and thus Wu Sha is revered as the first person to open Yilan. He settled in Jiaoxi after finding its terrain suitable for living. His former residence is a century-old sanheyuán (traditional three-section residence) with a couplet outside that reads, "A true pioneer of land development unmatched, indeed, the first person to open Yilan." It is currently planned to be turned into the "Wu Sha Memorial Hall." The weathered red brick exterior exudes a strong sense of antiquity. Although the former residence of Wu Sha has been renovated, traces of the century-old building can still be felt. Inside, there are many introductions, records, and plaques hanging on the walls, most of which are related to Lanyang. Additionally, there are altars and portraits dedicated to Wu Sha. Visitors interested in the history of Yilan's development are welcome to come here for a visit, and it is believed they will gain valuable insights!
