Qingshui Grand Gate Introduction
The Dongshan River flows slowly toward the sea, and at a place called Xiaqing Shui, it is the lowest area at the river's estuary. The Qingshui Floodgate, also known as Wujie Tidal Gate, is a well-known floodgate attraction in Wujie Township, Yilan. The Qingshui Floodgate has 20 sluice gates, each 2.5 meters wide, which play a significant role in regulating water flow, thus reducing the occurrence of floods or saltwater intrusion downstream of the Dongshan River. The floodgate offers a great view and beautiful scenery, making it a perfect spot for watching sunsets or moonlit nights, with the shimmering water reflecting the travelers' silhouettes. It is also a filming location for well-known Taiwanese movies, attracting many tourists to visit. Besides its function of regulating water flow, this area is a favorite spot for anglers, as the intersection of freshwater and seawater at the floodgate provides rich ecological resources of fish and shrimp, and also attracts many water birds to feed. Following the river mouth from the floodgate, one can reach the Lanyang River Estuary Bird Sanctuary to enjoy birdwatching.
