Li Ze International Puppet Art Village Introduction
The Puppetry Art Village is Taiwan's first art park centered around contemporary puppetry. It incorporates the creative energy of the "Without the Unique Puppet Studio," a leader in contemporary puppetry theater with 25 years of experience. The village is a captivating creative space that inspires infinite artistic imagination through puppetry creation, cultural interactions, performances, educational outreach, and international exchanges. It is a pioneering art creative cluster globally focusing on puppetry and serves as a nurturing base and center for international puppetry talent in Taiwan. Located near the Dongshan River and next to Lize Old Street, the Puppetry Art Village is a rehabilitated architectural complex within Yilan's old granary, which is one of the region's important cultural landscapes. The village includes a puppet exhibition hall, a professional puppet-making factory, artist studios, rehearsal spaces, three performance spaces of various sizes, and an outdoor theater, making it the most extensive contemporary puppetry creative exchange base in Asia. The "Resident Artist Program" is an important international exchange initiative launched by the village in 2016. Over eight years, it has hosted 68 artists from 27 countries for creation, performances, and exchanges, resulting in fruitful international collaborations. Moreover, the village frequently organizes professional puppetry master classes to cultivate contemporary puppetry talent in Taiwan. In recent years, due to the perceived shortage of craft talent in domestic and international theaters, it has gathered quality educators from the local puppetry field to establish the first "International Puppetry Craftsman School" supported by the National Culture and Arts Foundation's "Art Future Action Plan." This school systematically nurtures aspiring professionals in puppetry craft and creation, and the enthusiastic participation of students in its second cohort demonstrates the school's growing reputation and expectations to become a significant center for contemporary puppetry talent in Taiwan. "Puppetry in the Granary" is a special initiative by the village to engage the public in hands-on experiences of puppetry art. Leveraging the rich environment of the village, it features diverse areas such as the "World Puppet Exhibition," "Puppetry Base Visits," and "Interactive Puppet Theater," and annually plans various park activities. Among these, the visit to the "Puppet Family" and the "Puppetry United Nations" showcases over 20 years of fascinating collections, spanning from Taiwan to Southeast Asia, from Asia to Europe, and from the old granary to the contemporary puppetry base. Led by puppetry artisans, visitors can explore and witness the exciting world of puppetry art and its diverse cultural backgrounds. Participants can also engage in different forms of puppetry through experiences such as "Puppet Manipulation" and "Creative Puppet DIY," making their own puppet creations. The village also hosts art educational initiatives targeted at schools, festive events, and open days, allowing people of all ages in Taiwan to experience the aesthetics of puppetry at close range while connecting with the international stage.
