Nanao Ecological Education Center Introduction
The Nanao Ecology Education Center and the Nanao Work Station of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Department, Yilan Branch, are located in the same building. In 1997, the Nanao Work Station relocated here and transformed the original camphor tree afforestation area into a native plant specimen garden. The Nanao Ecology Education Center was established alongside the main office building to promote educational explanations regarding the utilization of Taiwan’s forest resources and ecological conservation. In addition to the indoor exhibits, the native tree garden outside the center is also worth a visit. The plants within the native tree garden are organized according to a plant classification system, featuring a total of 120 species across 47 families, primarily woody plants, with vines and herbaceous plants as complements. It serves as a high-quality venue for extracurricular teaching for elementary and junior high schools in Yilan County, as well as schools in the northern region. The center is adjacent to three important conservation areas, including the Wushi Beach Natural Preserve, the Nanao Broadleaf Forest Natural Preserve, and the Important Habitat for Wildlife on Guanyin Coast. During its educational promotion efforts, the center also pays attention to the conditions and crises faced by the surrounding conservation areas. In addition to serving as a platform for local natural and cultural education in the Nanao area, the center allows visitors to learn about the surrounding conservation areas, biodiversity, forest ecosystem management, ecotourism, community forestry, and other topics, effectively fulfilling the best functions and services of the ecology education center.
