Bitan Weir Introduction

Bitan Weir is an important hydraulic construction located in the upper reaches of the Xindian River. The first generation of Bitan Weir was built in the 18th century and is a key part of the Liugong Canal, an important hydraulic project in the Qing Dynasty for the New Taipei area. This dam also created the picturesque scenery of the Bitan Scenic Area upstream. In 2015, Bitan Weir was severely damaged by Typhoon Soudelor, and the Water Resources Department of the New Taipei City Government promoted the "Bitan Weir Improvement and Surrounding Environment Construction Project" to repair the damaged Bitan Weir. Additionally, a fish passage was established on the right bank of the weir to allow migratory species in the Xindian River to swim upstream to their habitats.
