Kaohsiung City Puppet Shadow Play Museum Introduction

Over three hundred years ago, shadow puppetry was introduced from Chaozhou, mainland China, and Kaohsiung became an important base and preservation site for this art form in Taiwan. To maintain and promote this precious traditional art, the Shadow Puppet Museum, renovated inside and out, opened in Gangshan in 2013 with a brand-new look. The museum's exterior is uniquely designed with leather weaving style, with pure white lines interlacing, creating different light and shadow effects day and night. The stunning mosaic shadow puppet murals also leave a deep impression on visitors. Inside, it is divided into six thematic areas: "Traditional Training Room," "Exhibition Area," "Resource Room," "Theater," "Digital Shadow Theater," and "Experience Zone," using an interactive guided approach that balances traditional preservation and modern technological development. Regular monthly performances allow visitors to enjoy authentic traditional theatrical performances on the original ox-cart stage, while also appreciating the exquisite craftsmanship of shadow puppetry within the museum, ensuring this delicate traditional art continues to thrive in Kaohsiung.
