Taiwan Craft House - Huang Ma-qing Wood Carving Studio Introduction
Born in Lu Kong, a place known for its lineage of sculpting masters, Huang Ma-qing began his apprenticeship under woodcarver Wang Jin-yi at the age of 14, laying the foundation for his traditional woodcarving skills. The woodcarving techniques in Lu Kong mainly originate from the Quanzhou school of Fujian, characterized by intricate styles that vividly depict flora, fauna, and historical figures. Huang Ma-qing's woodcarving creations focus on the natural ecological environment of Taiwan, highlighting themes such as wetlands, horseshoe crabs in Kinmen, and black-faced spoonbills at the Qigu estuary. He invests emotions into each piece of wood, carving them meticulously to awaken the public's awareness of humanity's selfish behaviors that have disrupted the habitat of various species. To preserve these beautiful forms, he strives to carve their images, seeking to rediscover the beautiful memories that once existed in this land.
