Taiwan Handicrafts Promotion Center - Huang Ma-Qing Wood Carving Studio Introduction
Born in Lukang, a place renowned for its carving masters, he began his apprenticeship at the age of 14 under woodcarver Mr. Wang Jin-yi, laying the foundation for traditional wood carving. The wood carving technique of Lukang primarily inherits from the Quanzhou school from mainland China, characterized by its intricate style, vividly depicting flowers, birds, insects, fish, and mythological figures. Huang Ma-qing's wood carving creations focus more on Taiwan's natural ecological environment, such as wetlands, horseshoe crabs from Kinmen, and black-faced spoonbills at Qigu estuary. He invests his emotions into each piece of wood, chipping away to awaken the public to the "selfish actions of humanity that have already harmed the habitat ecology of symbiotic species." In order to preserve these beautiful forms, he strives to carve their images, seeking to find the beautiful memories that once existed in this land.
