Orchid Fern Bicycle Trail Introduction
The Orchid Fern Cycling Path, spanning 7.4 kilometers between Jiouru and Changzhi, is a dedicated bike path designed using the space beneath the elevated roadway of the Pingtung section of National Highway No. 2. It is the first cycling path in Taiwan that meets national highway standards. The path is sheltered from the sun and rain by the elevated roadway, allowing cyclists to ride without worrying about weather conditions. There are also dedicated traffic signals for bicycles along the entire route to enhance safety, enabling cyclists to fully enjoy the thrill of riding against the wind. Along the Orchid Fern Cycling Path, various flowers and plants, such as Phalaenopsis orchids, Oncidium orchids, bougainvillea, and Staghorn ferns, have been planted around the bridge piers and open spaces, creating a vibrant green corridor that resembles an outdoor green passage. In addition, many carefully crafted installation artworks by artists have become part of the landscape, bringing a unique artistic flair to the Orchid Fern Cycling Path. The path crosses through the towns of Jiouru, Yanpu, and Changzhi, connecting many rural roads. By following the signage along the route, cyclists can reach various charming sights. For instance, those who tire from cycling and wish to quench their thirst can visit the Lemon Marketing Cooperative to freshly squeeze a glass of kumquat lemonade. Cyclists who appreciate rural scenery can visit Elderly Village to see koi fish in the ditches, Fujian-style Sanhe courtyard houses with a history of over a hundred years, and casuarina trees over 200 years old. If you're looking to play in the water, head to the Spring Ecozone, where naturally springing underground water converges and bubbles can be seen in the creek—an interesting phenomenon. Therefore, visiting cyclists on the Orchid Fern Cycling Path are encouraged to explore the extending rural roads to deeply experience the local culture and have beautiful encounters with the simple countryside.
