Haikou Desert Introduction
Haikou Desert is located beside Provincial Highway No. 26 in Haikou Village, Checheng Township, Pingtung County. It is approximately 1,800 meters long, 250 meters wide, and more than 10 meters thick, stretching in a northeast-southwest direction. During the northeast monsoon season, the entire desert area appears like the swirling sands of the Sahara Desert, earning it the nickname "Little Sahara Desert." The Haikou Desert is primarily formed due to the unique topography of Pingtung, which causes the northeast monsoon winds to blow consistently, influenced by sea breezes, creating this natural and distinctive landscape.
