Haikou Desert Introduction
Haikou Desert is located alongside Provincial Highway 26 in Haikou Village, Checheng Township, Pingtung County. It stretches approximately 1,800 meters in length, 250 meters in width, and has a thickness of over 10 meters, oriented in a northeast-southwest direction. During the season of downslope winds, the entire desert area resembles the rolling sands of the Sahara Desert, earning it the nickname "Little Sahara Desert." The Haikou Desert is primarily formed due to the unique topography of Pingtung, which creates downslope winds that, over many years of blowing and being influenced by sea breezes, result in this naturally unusual landscape.
