Baotown Art and Cultural Center Introduction
The "Baodong Arts and Cultural Center" is located on Zhongshan Road in Taitung City. It was originally the mayor's official residence during the Japanese colonial era, exuding a strong sense of nostalgia. The Baodong Arts and Cultural Center is now a small arts and cultural park, with indoor spaces dedicated to art exhibitions and capable of hosting a variety of dynamic cultural performances, providing a space for citizens to relax and enjoy. The name "Baodong" comes from the Amis language "Paoson" or "Paposogan," meaning a place with small hills. It is one of the earliest developed areas in Taitung City, with records of residents from the Pingpu people during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, and later Han settlers in the late Tongzhi period. The existing wooden dormitories were built in 1936. Although they fell into disrepair over the years, government restoration efforts have breathed new life into these old buildings. A short walk from the Baodong Arts and Cultural Center will take visitors to the Beidong Japanese dormitory complex or Baosang Townhouse, where they can also admire the elegance of traditional Japanese wooden architecture.
