Pao Town Arts and Culture Center Introduction
The "Baodong Cultural and Arts Center" is located on Zhongshan Road in Taitung City. It was originally the Mayor's official residence during the Japanese colonial period and is filled with a strong nostalgic atmosphere. The Baodong Cultural and Arts Center has now become a small artistic park, with indoor spaces for art exhibitions and the hosting of various cultural performances, providing citizens with space for relaxation and recreation. The term "Baodong" comes from the Amis language "Paoson" or "Paposogan," meaning a place with small hills. It is one of the earliest developed areas in Taitung City, with records of Plains Indigenous peoples living here during the Daoguang period of the Qing dynasty, and Han settlers arriving by the end of the Tongzhi era. The existing wooden dormitories were built in 1936. Though they had fallen into disrepair over the years, government restoration has injected new life into the old buildings. A short walk from the Baodong Cultural and Arts Center to the Beidong Japanese Dormitory Building Complex or Baosang Tang House takes only a few minutes, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the elegance of the Japanese wooden architectural complexes.
