Beicheng Japanese Dormitory Complex, Taitung City Introduction

The Beicheng Japanese-style Dormitory Complex in Taitung City is one of the best-preserved Japanese official residences in Taiwan. Built in 1940, it originally served as accommodation for faculty members of Taitung High School for Girls (now National Taitung Senior High School) and witnessed an important historical trajectory of Taitung's development during the Japanese colonial period. The entire dormitory complex covers about 2.1 hectares, constructed using traditional Japanese wooden techniques with meticulous layouts and elegant appearances, fully reflecting the traditional characteristics of Japanese residences. After World War II, it continued to be used as public housing until it was designated as a historical building in Taitung County in 2007, becoming a precious cultural asset. Today, this historical building complex has been reborn in a new form, transformed into "Machiya Posong," which combines standalone townhome styles with a cultural creative youth accommodation space, infusing new life into the historical architecture. The name "Posong" comes from the Amis people's term for old Taitung, meaning "a vast area suitable for living and farming," symbolizing this dormitory complex's continuous welcome to every traveler after experiencing the changes through eras.
