Beimen Japanese-Style Dormitory Group, Taitung City Introduction
The Beitown Japanese-style Dormitory Complex in Taitung City is one of the best-preserved Japanese official residences in Taiwan. Built in 1940, it originally served as dormitories for the staff of Taitung Girls' High School (now National Taitung University High School), witnessing an important historical trajectory of Taitung's development during the Japanese colonial period. The entire complex covers an area of approximately 2.1 hectares and features traditional Japanese wooden construction techniques, with meticulous layouts and elegant exteriors that fully present the traditional style of Japanese residences. After World War II, it continued to serve as a government dormitory until it was designated a historical building in Taitung County in 2007, becoming a valuable cultural asset. Today, this group of old houses has been reborn as "Machiya Posong," combining the style of standalone Machiya with a creative youth hostel space, injecting new life into the historical architecture. The name "Posong" originates from the Amis people's term for old Taitung, meaning "a vast place suitable for living and farming," symbolizing the dormitory complex's endurance through changing times while continuing to welcome every traveler.
