Beitun Japanese-style Dormitory Group, Taitung City Introduction

The Beitang Japanese-style Dormitory Complex in Taitung City is one of the best-preserved Japanese official residences in Taiwan, built in 1940. Originally, it served as the dormitory for the faculty of Taitung Girls' High School (now National Taitung University). This complex witnesses the important historical trajectory of Taitung's development during the Japanese colonial period. Covering an area of approximately 2.1 hectares, the buildings employ traditional Japanese wooden construction techniques, featuring an elegant appearance and a carefully considered layout that showcases the traditional style of Japanese residences. After World War II, it continued to be used as a public dormitory until it was designated as a historical building in Taitung County in 2007, becoming a valuable cultural asset. Today, this old building complex has been reborn in a new form as "Machiya Posong," combining the standalone machiya style with a creative youth hostel space, infusing new life into the historical architecture. The name "Posong" originates from the Amis people's term for old Taitung, meaning "a vast place suitable for living and farming," symbolizing that this dormitory complex continues to welcome every traveler throughout the ages.
