Beitiao Japanese Dormitory Group, Taitung City Introduction
Beicheng Japanese Dormitory Complex in Taitung City is one of the best-preserved Japanese official residences in Taiwan. Built in 1940, it originally served as the dormitory for teachers and staff of Taitung Girls' High School (now National Taitung University High School), witnessing an important historical trajectory of Taitung's development during the Japanese colonial period. The entire dormitory complex covers an area of approximately 2.1 hectares, featuring traditional Japanese wooden construction methods, meticulous layout, and elegant appearance, fully showcasing the traditional style of Japanese residences. After World War II, it continued to be used as a government dormitory until it was designated as a historic building in Taitung County in 2007, becoming a valuable cultural asset. Today, this group of old buildings has been revitalized as "Machiya Posong," combining the standalone Machiya style with a cultural creative youth hostel space, injecting new life into the historical architecture. The name "Posong" originates from the Amis people's term for old Taitung, meaning "a vast place suitable for living and farming," symbolizing how this dormitory complex has endured through the times, continuing to welcome every traveler.
