Xiuguluan River Introduction

Xiuguluan River originates from Xiuguluan Mountain in the Central Mountain Range, at an elevation of 3,200 meters. It flows northward through the Hualien-Taitung Valley, bends east in Ruisui Township, cuts across the Coast Mountain Range, and empties into the Pacific Ocean at Dagangkou. The river is approximately 104 kilometers long, making it the largest river in eastern Taiwan and the only river that cuts through the Coast Mountain Range. The river has carved steep canyons, creating diverse geomorphological features such as meanders and river terraces, making it an excellent classroom for geology and topography. The downstream section of the Xiuguluan River, from Ruisui to Dagangkou, features a 24-kilometer-long canyon that traverses over twenty rapids and treacherous waters, with majestic canyons and unique rock formations along the way. It has become a popular destination for rubber boat rafting in Taiwan. The annual Xiuguluan River rafting tourism event, held regularly in June and July, has become the most significant rafting activity in the region.
