Yue Dong Recreation Area Introduction
Yue Cave is located in Fengbin Township, Hualien County, approximately one kilometer south of Shiti Bay and near Gangkou Village. It is a natural limestone cave and is considered a sacred place by the indigenous people of the Gangkou tribe. Inside the cave, there is a lake about five meters deep, with its water level rising and falling according to the phases of the moon, hence the name "Yue Cave," also known as "Moon Well." According to legend, the lake is home to many eels, including a giant one that weighs over ten kilograms, referred to as the "thousand-year eel," which is known to be aggressive. Thus, no one has dared to dive into the water to explore it. Yue Cave is situated at an elevation of approximately 80 meters and is about 800 meters from the coast. The entrance is about 25 meters high, and the cave extends roughly 176 meters in total. Its shape is quite unique; the cave contains two chambers. The left chamber has a larger opening, extending about 50 meters, with a narrow, pointed ceiling that houses thousands of bats, adding to its mysterious atmosphere. The right chamber is shorter, measuring about 40 meters. Inside the cave is dark and mysterious, with stalactites adorning the walls, and bat colonies hanging above. The cave features various geological formations like flowstone, dripping formations, stalagmites, swallows' nest fossils, and fish head fossils. To explore the cave, visitors must take a small boat operated by a guide, using the boat's lighting to appreciate the beauty inside. The temperature in Yue Cave is around 20 degrees Celsius, making it a pleasant destination year-round, warm in winter and cool in summer.
