Dafeng Volcano Neck Introduction
The volcanic area in eastern Taiwan and its offshore islands is part of the northern extension of the Luzon volcanic arc. The landscape resulting from volcanic activity on the east coast is quite common and varies widely, including various igneous rock formations on Green Island and Orchid Island, as well as the andesite columns at Wu Shi Bi, all of which are invaluable geological educational materials. The Dafengfeng volcanic neck is a valuable site for studying coastal volcanic landforms, located on the eastern coast of Zhangyuan Village, between Hualien County and Taitung County, and is currently managed by Taitung County. The landward part features two prominent rock masses: one being a blocky rock and the other a basalt with fan-shaped columnar joints, commonly referred to as "Dajianshi," which is a conical hill with classic volcanic neck columnar joint structure. Close to the coastline is a smaller marine erosion platform formed by the long-term erosion of igneous rocks by seawater. The Dafengfeng volcanic neck presents a well-preserved structure, with its unique pleated skirt-like tower-shaped columnar joints resembling those found on Yuanbei Island in Penghu, showcasing a distinct landscape created by volcanic activity.
