Dafengfeng Volcanic Neck Introduction
The eastern and offshore volcanic region of Taiwan is the northern extension of the Luzon Volcanic Arc. The volcanic activities along the eastern coast have created a diverse range of landscapes, including various igneous rock formations on Green Island and Orchid Island, as well as the andesite columns at Wushi Harbor, all of which are extremely valuable geological educational materials. The Dafen Volcano Neck is a significant geological feature for research located on the eastern coastline near Cangyuan Village, situated between Hualien County and Taitung County, and is currently managed by Taitung County. The part closer to the land primarily features two large rock formations: one is a block lava, and the other is basalt with fan-shaped columnar jointing, locally known as "Dajian Rock," which is a hill with typical volcanic neck columnar jointing structure. Near the coastline, there is a smaller scale marine erosion platform formed due to long-term wave action on the igneous rocks. The structure of the Dafen Volcano Neck is remarkably complete, with unique skirt-like tiered columns resembling those found on Yuanbei Island in Penghu, representing a distinctive landscape resulting from volcanic activities.
