Tropic of Cancer Introduction
There are three Tropic of Cancer markers in Taiwan, located in Shuishang Township, Chiayi; Wuzhuo Terrace, Hualien; and Fengbin Township. This Tropic of Cancer marker is situated at the 70.5-kilometer mark on Taiwan Route 11. The white landmark boasts a beautiful view of the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, often attracting many visitors to take photos and relax. But do you know why there is a narrow gap in the middle of this Tropic of Cancer marker? The Tropic of Cancer refers to 23.5° North latitude, symbolizing the boundary between the tropics and subtropics. The most notable difference is that the crops mainly grown south of the Tropic of Cancer in Taiwan are tropical pineapples and custard apples, while the predominant crops to the north are temperate crops such as tea and rice. At noon on the summer solstice, sunlight shines directly through the gap in the Tropic of Cancer marker, allowing visitors beside the tower to experience the phenomenon of having no shadow under the sun! Therefore, in addition to taking photos for memories, visitors can also read the explanatory sign to understand the wonders of the seasons!
