Tropic of Cancer Introduction
Taiwan has a total of three Tropic of Cancer markers, located in Shuishang Township, Chiayi, Wuzhulin Plateau in Hualien, and Fengbin Township. This Tropic of Cancer monument is situated at the 70.5-kilometer mark on Provincial Highway 11. The pristine landmark offers beautiful views of the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, attracting many tourists for photos and relaxation. But do you know why there is a small gap in the middle of this Tropic of Cancer marker? The Tropic of Cancer refers to 23.5° North latitude, symbolizing the boundary between tropical and subtropical regions. The most noticeable crops grown south of the Tropic are tropical fruits like pineapples and custard apples, while temperate crops such as tea and rice are primarily grown to the north. During the summer solstice, sunlight perfectly shines through the gap in the Tropic of Cancer marker, creating a phenomenon where visitors beside the tower can experience the wonder of having no shadow under the sun! Therefore, besides taking photos here as a keepsake, you can also read the explanation board to understand the mysteries of the seasons!
