Tropic of Cancer Introduction
Taiwan has a total of three Tropic of Cancer markers, located in Shuishang Township in Chiayi, Wuzhuhai Terrace in Hualien, and Fengbin Township. This particular Tropic of Cancer marker is situated at kilometer 70.5 on Provincial Highway No. 11. The white landmark boasts a beautiful view of the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, attracting many visitors who come here to take photos and relax. But do you know why there is a small crack in the middle of this Tropic of Cancer marker? The Tropic of Cancer refers to 23.5° north latitude, symbolizing the dividing line between the tropical and subtropical zones. The most obvious distinction is that the main crops planted south of the Tropic of Cancer in Taiwan are tropical ones like pineapples and cherimoyas, while the primary crops to the north are temperate crops such as tea and rice. During the summer solstice, the sunlight will shine perfectly through the crack in the Tropic of Cancer marker at noon, allowing visitors by the tower to experience the phenomenon of having no shadow under the sun at that moment! So, besides taking photos for memories, visitors can also read the explanatory signs to understand the wonders of the four seasons!
