Tropic of Cancer Introduction
Taiwan has a total of three Tropic of Cancer markers, located in Shueishang Township in Chiayi, Wuzhu Plateau in Hualien, and Fengbin Township. This Tropic of Cancer marker is situated at the 70.5-kilometer point on Provincial Highway 11. The white landmark boasts stunning views of the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, attracting many tourists for photography and relaxation. But do you know why there is a small gap in the middle of this Tropic of Cancer marker? The Tropic of Cancer refers to 23.5° North Latitude, symbolizing the boundary between tropical and subtropical regions. The most evident distinction is that the main crops grown south of the Tropic of Cancer in Taiwan are tropical fruit like pineapples and cherimoyas, while the primary crops to the north are temperate crops like tea and rice. During the summer solstice at noon, sunlight perfectly shines through the gap in the Tropic of Cancer marker, allowing visitors next to the tower to experience the phenomenon of having no shadow under the sun! Therefore, besides taking photos as a keepsake, visitors can also read the explanatory signs to understand the wonders of the four seasons!
