Tropic of Cancer Introduction
There are a total of three Tropic of Cancer markers in Taiwan, located in Shuishang Township, Chiayi; Wuzhu Plateau in Hualien; and Fengbin Township. This Tropic of Cancer marker is situated at the 70.5 km mark on Provincial Highway 11. The white landmark boasts beautiful views of the Central Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, often attracting many tourists who come here to take photos and relax. But do you know why there is a small gap in the middle of this marker? The Tropic of Cancer refers to the latitude of 23.5°N, symbolizing the boundary between tropical and subtropical regions. Most notably, the crops mainly planted south of the Tropic of Cancer in Taiwan are tropical fruits like pineapples and custard apples, whereas the main crops to the north are temperate crops such as tea and rice. At noon on the summer solstice, sunlight perfectly shines through the gap in the Tropic of Cancer marker, allowing visitors beside the tower to experience the phenomenon of no shadow under the sun! So, aside from taking photos for memories, you can also read the explanatory board to understand the wonders of the four seasons!
