Yongcheng Historical House Introduction
The Laogu Stone House is a symbol of rich cultural heritage in Penghu. The Yongcheng Old House, located in the Hejie Community, consists of three sections of traditional houses with a total of 48 compartments during its peak, which included three rows, eight rooms, and four stone windows. Built in the 1640s due to the family's wealth and expansion, it formed a large clan residence complex. At its height, there were eight homes where over a hundred people lived together and operated a grocery store called "Yongchenghao," known for its prosperity far and wide, forming a small settlement referred to as "Yongcheng" within Hejie Village. By the late 1960s, the once grand residences began to decline, but today, visitors can witness the beauty of traditional Penghu architecture and its historical trajectory. Traditional Penghu houses often featured stone windows or carved stone vents, which not only integrated structurally with the walls but also resisted the weathering effects of strong sea winds common in the area. This explains why, after the old house collapsed, only the stone windows remain steadfast. Behind the house, there is a row of Laogu stone walls that shield against the strong northeast winds. Three windows are left in the wall for monitoring boats and observing the tides. 【Recommended Visit Duration】 0.5 hours
