Yongcheng Old House Introduction
The Laogustone House is a symbol of rich cultural significance in Penghu. The Yongcheng Old House, located in the Hejie Community, is a three-section ancient house that once had three rows, eight rooms, and four courtyards, totaling 48 spaces. Built in the 1640s when the family was prosperous and expanding, this large clan house group is a testament to that wealth. At its peak, there were eight residences where more than a hundred people lived together, and they operated the "Yongcheng" grocery store, which became well-known for its affluence, forming a small community known as "Yongcheng" in Hejie Village. However, by the late 1960s, the once splendid eight houses fell into disrepair. Today, visitors can witness the beauty and historical significance of traditional Penghu residential architecture. Traditional houses in Penghu often featured stone-carved windows or stone-leak windows, which not only integrated structurally with the walls but also better resisted the erosion from the strong sea winds. This explains why, after the collapse of the ancient houses, only the stone windows remain standing. Behind the house, there is a complete row of Laogustone walls that block the strong northeast wind. Three windows are left in the wall to allow for monitoring of boats and observing tides. 【Recommended Visit Duration】 0.5 hours
