Yongcheng Ancient House Introduction
Laogushi House is the most culturally vibrant symbol of Penghu. Yongcheng Ancient Residence is located in the Sanluo Ancient Residence of the Hejie Community, which at its peak had three rows, eight houses, and four stone pillars, totaling 48 compartments. Built around the 1640s, it was constructed by a wealthy family to accommodate their growing clan, forming a sizable ancestral house complex. At its height, there were eight houses where over a hundred people lived together, and they operated the "Yongcheng Store," a grocery business known for its wealth throughout the region, giving rise to a small settlement known as "Yongcheng" in Hejie Village. However, by the late 1960s, the once grand houses gradually fell into disrepair, and today, one can witness the beauty and historical trajectory of traditional Penghu residential architecture. Traditional Penghu houses prefer to use stone windows or stone-carved openings; not only do these structures integrate with the walls, but they also better resist the weathering brought on by the strong sea winds of Penghu. This is why, after the collapse of the old houses, only the stone windows remain standing firm. Behind the houses, there is a complete row of Laogushi stone walls that block the strong northeast winds, with three windows left open for monitoring boats and observing the tides.
