Yongcheng Old House Introduction
The Laogu Stone House is a symbol rich in local cultural significance in Penghu. The Yongcheng Ancient House is located in the Sanluo Ancient House of the Hejie community, which reached its peak with three rows, eight rooms, and four stone window frames, totaling 48 compartments. Built around the 1640s, it was constructed by a wealthy family for their expansion, forming a sizable ancestral house complex. During its heyday, there were eight residences where over a hundred people lived together, and they opened the "Yongcheng" grocery store for business, known for their wealth far and wide, forming a small settlement referred to as "Yongcheng" in Hejie Village. By the end of the 1960s, the eight magnificent houses gradually fell into disrepair, and today visitors can witness the beauty of traditional Penghu residential architecture and its historical trajectory. Traditional residences in Penghu tend to use stone window frames or carved windows, which not only integrate with the walls structurally but also better resist the weathering threats posed by the strong sea winds. This explains why, after the ancient houses collapsed, only the stone window frames still stand firm. Behind the houses, there is a long Laogu stone wall that blocks the strong northeast winds. Three openings have been left in the wall for monitoring boats and observing the tides. 【Suggested stay time】 0.5 hours
