Yongcheng Ancient House Introduction
The Laugust Stone House is a symbol rich in cultural significance in Penghu. Yongcheng Ancient House, located in the Hejie Community, features three long houses that, at their peak, included three rows, eight rooms, and four jutted stone roofs, totaling 48 compartments. Built around the 1640s, this group of ancestral houses was established due to the family's prosperity and population growth. At its height, there were eight residences housing over a hundred people, who opened a grocery store called "Yongcheng Store" to conduct business, becoming well-known for their wealth and forming a small settlement named "Yongcheng" in Hejie Village. However, by the late 1960s, the eight splendid residences gradually fell into disrepair. Today, visitors can witness the beauty and historical trajectory of traditional house architecture in Penghu. Traditional residential buildings in Penghu prefer to use stone windows or carved stone vent windows, which not only integrate structurally with the walls but also better withstand the erosion threat posed by the strong sea winds in Penghu. This is why, after the collapse of the ancient houses, only the stone windows remain steadfast. Behind the houses, an entire row of Laugust stone walls shields against the strong northeast wind. Three windows are left on the wall for monitoring boats and observing the tides. 【Suggested stay time】 0.5 hours
