Whale Cave (also known as Little Door Whale Cave) Introduction
Xiaomen Whale Cave is located in Xiaomen Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Originally, Whale Cave was a basalt headland, but after long-term exposure to the northeast monsoon and continuous erosion by seawater, it has ultimately formed a sea arch resembling a whale stranded on the beach due to coastal erosion, hence the name "Whale Cave." The area near Xiaomen Whale Cave has a terrain composed of basalt geology, making the land relatively barren, where plants struggle to grow, with cacti being the only ones that can adapt to this environment. Walking along the slope, one can see many cacti thriving despite the harsh conditions, with some even blooming beautiful flowers, leaving a lasting impression. Near Whale Gate, one can see "Honeycomb Fields" a short distance away. This unique sight is actually a method developed by locals in the past to shield plants and crops from the adverse effects of the strong northeast monsoon in winter. They built honeycomb fields using volcanic rocks to protect against winter winds, facilitating the growth of plants and crops, making it a very distinctive landscape.
