Whale Cave (also known as Little Door Whale Cave) Introduction
Xiaomen Whale Cave is located in Xiaomen Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Originally a basalt cape, the whale cave has been shaped by long-term northeast monsoon winds and constant erosion by seawater, resulting in a sea-eroded arch resembling a whale stranded on the beach, hence the name "Whale Cave." The area around Xiaomen Whale Cave features rugged terrain due to basalt geology, making it difficult for plants to grow, with cacti being the only species that have adapted to the environment. Walking along the slopes, one can see many cacti thriving despite the barren landscape, with some even blooming beautiful flowers, leaving a lasting impression. Near the Whale Gate, visitors can also spot the "Hive Fields," a unique sight created by local residents in the past to shield plants and crops from the harsh northeast winter winds. They built honeycomb-shaped fields using porous stones to protect vegetation, making it a remarkable feature of the area.
