Whale Cave Introduction
Xiaomen Whale Cave is located in Xiaomen Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Originally a basalt cape, the Whale Cave has long been eroded by the northeastern monsoon and the continuous impact of seawater. Eventually, it formed a sea arch that resembles a whale stranded on the beach, which is how it got its name "Whale Cave." The area around Xiaomen Whale Cave features a terrain formed by basalt geology, making the land relatively barren and challenging for most plants to grow. The only exception is the cactus, which has adapted to this environment. Walking along the slope, one can see many cacti thriving despite the poor terrain, with some even blooming beautiful flowers, leaving a lasting impression. Near the Whale Gate, one can see the "Honeycomb Fields" not far away. This unique sight is the result of local residents' efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of the strong northeastern monsoon on plants and crops in winter by building honeycomb-like structures using rocks to shield them from the harsh winter winds, allowing for better growth of plants and crops.
