Waian Village, Waian Fishing Port Introduction
Wai'an Village is located in the southern part of Xiyu Township, bordered to the north by Neian Village. It has a natural barrier that makes it less susceptible to northeast monsoon attacks. Wai'an Village is the most populated community in Xiyu Township; due to its small area, the houses are built along the coast and shaped by the terrain, giving it a grand and unique appearance. Because of its topography, Wai'an Village is very suitable for fishing, with a large fishing port and many fishing boats (the highest number of fishing boats in Penghu), making fishing the primary livelihood for most residents. The Wai'an Fishing Port, classified as a Type II fishing port, is close to the Strait's migratory fishing grounds and has strong fishing activity. In 2011, it was selected as one of the "Top 10 Charming Fishing Ports" by the Fisheries Agency in the cultural category. The port presents a completely different style and imagery by day and night. The residents mainly practice Taoism, and the Wen Wang Temple serves as the center of faith in Wai'an Village, enshrining Lord Wang of the Wen Mansion and other deities including Zheng, Hu, Jiang, Ke, and Li. There is also the Buddhist Ci Hang Temple, dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva. Every year, Wai'an Village hosts the Lantern Festival fishing light festival, riddle guessing evenings, and blessing pilgrimage activities. At night, boats gather at Wai'an Fishing Port, and at auspicious times, the fishing lights illuminate the night sky, brightening Wai'an as if it were daytime, attracting many tourists to participate in the festivities.
