Shetou Mountain Recreation Area Introduction
Shetou Mountain is located at the southwestern tip of Penghu, on a small peninsula that protrudes at the northern end of Fengguiwei. Together with the northern coast's Jinguaitou, it guards Magong Bay. Its shape resembles a python lying on the sea, hence the name "Shetou Mountain." From the top of Shetou Mountain, visitors can overlook the bay, gaze at Magong City in the distance, and also view Four Corner Islet and Penghu Inner Bay. Shetou Mountain was once a significant military site; in 1622, the Dutch built a fort here, which was the earliest Red-haired Fort in Taiwan. The ruins of this fort were designated as a national historic site in 2001. On the southeast side of Shetou Mountain, the French military memorial and the Japanese warship Matsushima sinking memorial are established from different eras. The former commemorates the soldiers who died from disease during the French occupation of Magong Island, while the latter was established by the Japanese government to memorialize the officers and soldiers who perished when the warship "Matsushima," docked near Magong Harbor, suffered an explosion in the munitions depot. Through the planning and reorganization by the Penghu County Government, Shetou Mountain has been designated as a historical battlefield site. The former military site, which reflects the turbulent years of conflict at Shetou Mountain, has now become one of the attractions for visitors to enjoy and relax. 【Recommended Stay Time】 3 hours
