Shetou Mountain Recreation Area Introduction
Shetou Mountain is located on a small peninsula at the north end of Fengguiwei in the southwestern corner of Penghu. Together with the Jin Gui head on the northern coast, it guards Magong Harbor. Its shape resembles a python lying in the sea, hence the name "Shetou Mountain." Climbing Shetou Mountain offers a panoramic view of the bay, a distant look at Magong City, and sights of the Siqiao Islet and the inner bay of Penghu. Historically, Shetou Mountain was a significant military site; in 1622, the Dutch built a fort here, which is considered Taiwan's earliest Dutch fort, the remnants of which were designated as a national historic site in the 90th year of the Republic of China. On the southeast side of Shetou Mountain, there are memorials for fallen French soldiers and the Japanese warship Matsushima, established in different eras. The former commemorates soldiers who died from disease while occupying Magong Island, while the latter is a monument set up by the Japanese government to commemorate officers and soldiers who perished due to an explosion at the ammunition depot of the Japanese ship "Matsushima" that was docked near Magong Harbor. Under the planning and restructuring by the Penghu County government, Shetou Mountain has been designated as a historic battlefield site. The past military site, once a place of conflict, has now become a viewpoint and rest area for tourists. 【Recommended stay time】 3 hours
