Shetou Mountain Recreation Area Introduction
Snake Head Mountain is located at the southwestern tip of Penghu, on a small peninsula at the northern end of Fengguiwei, serving alongside the northern coast’s Golden Tortoise Head to guard Magong Bay. Its shape resembles a python lying in the sea, hence the name "Snake Head Mountain." Climbing up Snake Head Mountain offers a breathtaking view of the bay, a distant sight of Magong City, and perspectives of Si Jiao Yu and the inner bay of Penghu. Historically, Snake Head Mountain was an important military site; the Dutch built a fortress here in 1622, which is recognized as the earliest Red Hair Fortress in Taiwan. This historical site was designated a national monument in 2001. On the southeastern side of Snake Head Mountain, there are a memorial for fallen French soldiers and a monument for the Japanese warship Matsushima, which commemorate different eras. The former honors soldiers who died from disease during the French occupation of Magong Island, while the latter was established by the Japanese government to commemorate the officers and crew members of the ship Matsushima, which sank near Magong Port due to an explosion in its ammunition depot. With planning and renovation by the Penghu County Government, Snake Head Mountain has been designated as a historic battlefield site, showcasing the military heritage of the past and has become a scenic and resting spot for visitors. 【Recommended stay time】 3 hours
