Shetou Mountain Recreation Area Introduction
Snake Head Mountain is located in the southwestern corner of Penghu, on a small peninsula that juts out at the northern end of Fengguiwei, guarding Magong Harbor alongside the Golden Tortoise Head on the northern shore. Its shape resembles a snake lying in the sea, hence the name "Snake Head Mountain." Climbing to the top of Snake Head Mountain offers a panoramic view of the bay and a distant sight of Magong City, as well as the Four Corners Isle and the Penghu Inner Bay. Historically, Snake Head Mountain was a significant military site; in 1622, the Dutch built a fort here, which is considered the earliest Red-Haired Fortress in Taiwan. The ruins of this Red-Haired Fortress were designated as a national historic site in 2001. On the southeastern side of Snake Head Mountain, there are memorials: one commemorates French soldiers who died of disease during the French occupation of Magong Island, while the other honors the Japanese soldiers who perished when the battleship Matsushima sank due to an ammunition explosion while docked near Magong Harbor, established by the Japanese government. Under the planning and restructuring by the Penghu County government, Snake Head Mountain has been designated as the site of an ancient battlefield, showcasing the military history of the past and has become a popular scenic spot for tourists to rest and enjoy the view. [Recommended stay time] 3 hours.
