Snake Head Mountain Recreation Area Introduction
SheTou Mountain is located at the southwestern tip of Penghu, on a small peninsula that juts out at the northern end of Fengguiwei, guarding Magong Bay together with the northern coast's Jinguaitou. Its shape resembles a python lying in the sea, hence the name "SheTou Mountain." From the top of SheTou Mountain, visitors can overlook the bay and gaze at Magong City, as well as view the Four Corner Islet and Penghu Inner Bay. Historically, SheTou Mountain was a significant military site; in 1622, the Dutch built a fort here, which is known as Taiwan's earliest "Red-Haired Fort." The site of this fort was designated as a national historic site in 2001. On the southeast side of SheTou Mountain, a monument commemorating fallen French soldiers and a monument for the Japanese warship Matsushima's sinking have been erected, established during different eras. The former commemorates soldiers who died of disease during the French occupation of Magong Island, while the latter was established by the Japanese government to honor the officers and soldiers who perished when the warship "Matsushima" sank near Magong Harbor due to an explosion in its powder magazine. Through planning and restructuring by the Penghu County Government, SheTou Mountain has been established as an ancient battlefield site, showcasing the military history of the area and now serving as a scenic spot for tourists to relax and enjoy the view. 【Recommended stay time】 3 hours
