Shetou Mountain Recreation Area Introduction
Snake Head Mountain is located at the southwestern tip of Penghu, protruding from the northern end of Fengguiwei Peninsula. Together with the Golden Tortoise Head on the northern coast, it guards Magong Bay. Its shape resembles a python lying in the sea, hence the name "Snake Head Mountain." Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of the bay and a distant look at Magong City, as well as the surrounding islands, including Siyak Island and the inner bay of Penghu. Historically, Snake Head Mountain was an important military site; in 1622, the Dutch built a fort here, which is known as the earliest Red Hair City in Taiwan. The ruins of this fort were designated as a national historic site in 2001. On the southeastern side of Snake Head Mountain, there are memorials for fallen soldiers: one commemorating the French troops who died of disease during their occupation of Magong Island, and the other set up by the Japanese government to honor the officers and troops who perished when the warship Matsushima sank due to an explosion in its gunpowder magazine while docked near Magong Harbor. Through the planning and revitalization of the Penghu County Government, Snake Head Mountain has been designated as the site of an ancient battlefield, reflecting the military history of its past and now serves as a scenic spot for tourists to relax and enjoy. 【Recommended Stay Time】 3 hours
