Tungpan Island House Stamp Introduction
Dongyin Island is entirely composed of basalt, so the local residents utilize basalt as building materials for their homes. In fact, the Penghu area features relatively flat terrain resembling a lava plateau and lacks tall mountains to block the strong northeast monsoon that occurs in winter. Consequently, on the main island of Penghu, the residents have developed coral stone walls to shield crops from the harsh winter winds, allowing them to grow. However, Dongyin Island, which belongs to the southern region of Penghu, not only experiences the intense northeast monsoon in winter but also faces the southwest airflow from the south in summer. Hence, a unique architectural style known as "Yiziyin" has developed in Dongyin. The "Yiziyin" building pattern is a distinctive feature of the Dongyin area. In fact, the building materials for "Yiziyin" are quite similar to those in other parts of Penghu, primarily basalt or coral stone, and the orientation of the buildings is similarly determined by wind direction. However, the "Yiziyin" is different from residences in other regions as they do not have courtyard coral stone walls; instead, they stand independently like a stamp and have two doors on each wall, which is a distinctive characteristic of this style. Moreover, the "Yiziyin" usually only has one small window on each wall because the northeast monsoon is incredibly strong! Even though Dongyin Island is situated in the south, it cannot avoid the fierce northern winds. The "Yiziyin" residences in Dongyin have been designated by the government as valuable heritage and are actively protected, hoping to preserve this cultural historical site. 【Recommended stay time】 0.5 hours; Dongyin is generally for cruising or brief stops, so staying overnight at a local guesthouse is suggested.
