Tungkang Island Private Residence Wooden Print Introduction
Tongpan Island is entirely composed of basalt, so the local residents use this material for building their houses. In fact, the Penghu region is relatively flat, with terrain resembling a lava plateau, and there are no high mountains to block the strong northeast monsoon winds during winter. Therefore, on Penghu Island, the residents developed stone walls made of coral stone to shield crops from the harsh winter winds, allowing them to thrive. However, Tongpan Island, located to the south of Penghu, experiences not only strong northeast monsoon winds in winter but also the southwestern winds from the south in summer. As a result, a unique architectural style known as "Yiziyin" has developed in this area. This architectural form is characterized by its distinctive layout, featuring buildings constructed from the same basalt or coral stone materials found in other parts of Penghu, with the direction of the buildings determined by the wind direction. However, unlike houses in other regions, Yiziyin structures lack the coral stone courtyard walls, appearing more like independent stamps, with two doors on each wall, which is quite special about the Yiziyin style. In addition, typically only a small window is opened on one wall due to the extreme strength of the northeast monsoon! Although Tongpan Island is located in the south, it cannot escape the fierce invasion of northern winds. The Yiziyin residences on Tongpan Island have been designated as a valuable heritage site by the government and are actively protected, with hopes of preserving this cultural and historical legacy. [Recommended stay time] 0.5 hours; Tongpan Island is often visited for cruising or short stays, but it is also recommended to spend a night at the island's guesthouse.
