Tongpan Island House One-character Seal Introduction
Tongpan Island is entirely composed of basalt rock, so the local residents use basalt as building materials for their houses. In fact, the Penghu area has a relatively flat terrain, close to a lava plateau, and there are no high mountains to block the strong northeast monsoon during winter. Therefore, on Penghu Island, stone walls made of gulo stone have developed to block the strong northeast winds, allowing crops to grow. However, Tongpan Island, located in the southern part of Penghu, not only faces the strong northeast winds in winter but also welcomes the southwest airflow from the south in summer. This has resulted in a unique architectural style known as "Yizi Yin" in the Tongpan Island area. The Yizi Yin architectural style is a distinctive feature unique to this region of Tongpan Island. In fact, the building materials used in Yizi Yin are similar to those in other parts of Penghu, mainly consisting of basalt or gulo stone, and the direction of the buildings is also determined by wind direction. However, unlike houses in other areas, Yizi Yin does not have courtyard gulo stone walls; instead, they resemble a stamp, being independent structures with two doors on each wall, making Yizi Yin particularly special. Additionally, Yizi Yin usually has only a small window on one wall due to the intensity of the northeast monsoon! Although Tongpan Island is situated in the south, it still cannot avoid the fierce invasion of the north winds. The Yizi Yin residences in Tongpan Island have been designated by the government as precious heritage and are under active protection, hoping to preserve such cultural and historical relics. [Recommended stay time] 0.5 hours; Tongpan is mainly for cruising or short stops, or it is recommended to stay overnight at a homestay on the island.
