Dungong Island Introduction
Dongyin Island is located southwest of Penghu Main Island and is the largest and most impressive island in the Penghu archipelago with basalt columns. It is named for its shape, which resembles a barrel or plate. The steep sea cliffs formed by basalt columns have a light brown color due to oxidation, and the tops have weathered into round structures, earning it the nickname "Penghu Yellow Stone Park." On the southwestern coastal sea erosion platform, there are concentric circular holes formed by basalt lava flows, with raised rock blocks in the center resembling a blooming lotus flower, hence called "Lotus Platform." This unique topographical feature in Penghu becomes visible with the ebb and flow of tides. Below the eastern and southern sea cliffs, basalt blocks scattered nearby the sea erosion platform are often seen, filled with honeycomb-like holes; these "honeycomb rocks" are locally referred to as "Cat Stone," adding beauty to the coastline. <
