Tongpan Islet Introduction
Tongpan Island is located to the southwest of Penghu Main Island. It is the largest and most prominent island in the Penghu Archipelago, known for its columnar basalt formations. The island is named because its shape resembles a bucket or dish. The steep cliffs formed by basalt columns have turned light brown due to oxidation, and their tops have weathered into spherical structures, earning it the nickname "Penghu Huangshi Park." On the west-southwest coastline, there are concentric circular holes formed by basalt lava, with a raised rock in the center resembling a blooming lotus flower, hence called "Lotus Platform." This unique geological feature of Penghu appears and disappears with the tidal currents. Below the cliffs on the east and south sides, one can often see basalt rocks scattered with honeycomb-like holes, locally referred to as "Cat Stone," which adds beauty to the coastline. <
