Tungkang Island Introduction
Tongpan Island is located to the southwest of Penghu Island and is the largest and most impressive island in the Penghu archipelago characterized by basalt columns. It is named for its shape, which resembles a barrel or a tray. The steep sea cliffs formed by basalt columns are colored light brown due to oxidation, and the tops have weathered into spherical structures, earning it the nickname "Penghu Yellow Stone Park." On the eroded platform of the southwestern coast, there are concentric holes formed by basalt lava, with raised rock formations in the center resembling a blooming lotus flower, hence called "Lotus Platform." This unique geological feature is visible during the tidal cycles. Below the cliffs on the east and south sides, basalt blocks scattered with honeycomb-shaped holes can often be seen near the eroded platform. This type of rock, locally known as "Cat Stone," adds to the beauty of the coastline.
