Tung Pan Yu Introduction
Tunghsiao Island, located southwest of Penghu Main Island, is the largest and most scaled island in the Penghu Islands, known for its basalt columns. It is named for its shape, resembling a bucket or a plate. The steep cliffs formed by the basalt columns have turned a light brown color due to oxidation, and the tops have weathered into rounded structures, earning the nickname "Penghu Huangshi Park." On the western coastal erosion platforms, there are concentric circular holes formed by basalt lava eruptions, with a central uplift of rock resembling a blooming lotus flower, hence called "Lotus Terrace." This area reveals a unique topographical landscape of Penghu, as it alternates with tidal currents during the rise and fall of the sea. At the base of the cliffs to the east and south, basalt blocks with honeycomb-like holes can often be seen scattered near the coastal erosion platforms. These "honeycomb rocks" are locally referred to as "Cat Stone," adding charm to the coast. <
