Tungpan Island Introduction
Tongpan Island is located southwest of Penghu Island and is the largest and most expansive basalt columnar island in the Penghu archipelago. It is named for its shape, which resembles a barrel or plate. The steep cliffs made of basalt columns have turned light brown due to oxidation, and the tops have weathered into spherical structures, earning it the nickname "Penghu Yellow Stone Park." On the coastal erosion platform along the southwest coast, there are concentric circular holes formed by basalt lava eruptions, with a central raised rock resembling a blooming lotus flower, thus called "Lotus Terrace." This unique topographical feature of Penghu appears and disappears with the ebb and flow of tidal currents. Below the cliffs to the east and south, basalt blocks scattered around the erosion platform are often seen, covered in honeycomb-shaped holes, which are locally referred to as "Cat Stone," adding color to the coast. <
