Taichung City Military Dependents' Village Museum Introduction

Taichung Veterans General Community Museum, established in 1960, is located near the intersection of Jinhua North Road and Beitun Road in the Beitun District of Taichung. Originally known as "Beitun New Village," it was later renamed "Lingyun Community." This site is one of the 134 veteran communities in Taichung, primarily housing military personnel and their families from the Guizhou Aircraft Manufacturing Factory. Currently, three representative veteran community buildings have been preserved. Since August 2017, the museum has been operated and managed by Erguo Cultural and Creative Co., Ltd. In addition to showcasing artifacts, it offers experiences of community flavors and retro snacks, as well as traditional Taiwanese barbering. The site also features an old Taiwan vintage store and a cultural creative market, blending the new and old aspects of veteran community culture for visitors to enjoy. Over a decade ago, veterans who lived here gradually relocated, and the area underwent renovations to revitalize the space, preserving three representative veteran buildings and their auxiliary structures. It was completed in mid-November 2014 and occupies an area of about 200 ping, connecting contemporary city life with the historical culture of veteran communities, making it the first local museum in Taichung focused on the preservation of veteran community cultural assets. The Beitun New Village residences were built with hollow bricks, featuring 24-28 ping of indoor space, with two bedrooms, a living room, and bathroom facilities, considered quite spacious and comfortable at the time. Later, in the 55th year of the Republic of China, the Air Force Command Headquarters built another batch of residences on the north side of "Beitun New Village," named "Lingyun Community," providing more spacious living areas with front and back yard designs, which also belonged to "Beitun New Village." Notable figures in Taiwan, such as writer Meng Yao, military judge Liu Longfei from the Kaohsiung Incident, mathematics expert Lin Zhiping from National Chung Hsing University, women's movement pioneer He Chunrui, and Air Force pilot Ouyang Yifan, once lived here, giving the place special commemorative value. From the entrance of the museum, visitors can see the old-fashioned "Beitun New Village Grocery Store," with its nostalgic sour-sweet flavors and pinball machines, evoking many childhood memories. The "Little Plum Blossom Store" showcases various old Taiwanese living utensils and nostalgic documents, reflecting the aesthetic of life in earlier years. Walking along the narrow alleys between the veterans' residences, one can find an old traditional barbershop "Dafang Men's Barbershop," and further along is a permanent exhibition on the historical development of the veteran communities along with an annually changing special exhibition that sparks the public's imagination about life in these communities. Finally, visitors can experience the flavors of the community at "Fangzhenggu Veteran Village Cuisine," where they can taste "Taro Sweet Potato" along with traditional Taiwanese dishes and even some Southeast Asian cultural influences! Don't miss out on traditional shaved ice at "Fei Bing Guo Shi," and explore the monthly "Rescue Soldier Market" for a nostalgic experience of life in a veteran community, truly satisfying!
