Taichung City Military Dependents' Village Museum Introduction
Taichung City Military Village Museum, established in 1960, is located near the intersection of Jinhua North Road and Beitun Road in Beitun District, Taichung. Originally known as "Beitun New Village," it was later renamed "Lingyun Community" and is one of the 134 military villages in Taichung, primarily housing military personnel and their families from the Air Force Academy and Guizhou Aircraft Manufacturing Factory. Currently, three representative military village buildings are preserved. Since August 2017, it has been operated and managed by Liangguo Cultural and Creative Co., Ltd. In addition to displaying and promoting artifacts, it offers experiences of military village cuisine and retro ice treats, along with traditional Taiwanese barber services. The area also features an old Taiwan antique store and a cultural creative market that bring a sense of time to the military village, allowing visitors to experience the blend of old and new. More than a decade ago, veterans who lived here began relocating. Following renovations and the revitalization of military housing, three representative military village buildings and their auxiliary structures were preserved, with the re-opening in mid-November 2014, covering an area of over 200 ping. This site connects present-day civic life with the past military village culture, being the first local museum in Taichung focused on preserving military village cultural assets. The Beitun New Village military housing was built using hollow bricks, with an indoor area of 24-28 ping, featuring 2 bedrooms, a living room, and bathroom facilities, which was quite spacious and comfortable at the time. Later, in the 55th year of the Republic, another batch of housing was constructed to accommodate pilots and their families, named "Lingyun Community," located northward of the original Beitun New Village. This new space was even more expansive, with front and back yard designs, also part of the "Beitun New Village." Notable figures from Taiwan, such as novelist Meng Yao, military judge Liu Longfei from the Kaohsiung Incident, mathematics authority Lin Zhiping from National Chung Hsing University, women's movement pioneer He Chunrui, and Air Force pilot Ouyang Yifan, once resided here, giving it special commemorative value. At the entrance of the museum, visitors can see the old-style "Beitun New Village Grocery Store," where the traditional flavors and childhood games like pinball trigger many nostalgic memories. The "Little Plum Blossom Store" offers various old Taiwanese living utensils and nostalgic documents, allowing a glimpse into the aesthetic of life in earlier years. Walking along the narrow alleys between the military housing, one can find an old-fashioned barber shop for men, "Dafang Men's Haircut," and proceed to see a permanent exhibition detailing the history and development of military villages, sparking countless imaginations about life in those times. Finally, one can experience the flavor of military village dishes at "Fangzhenggu Military Village Taste," where traditional Taiwanese dishes and even some Southeast Asian cultural influences can be enjoyed. After that, visitors can try traditional shaved ice at "Fei Bing Fruit Room" and browse through the "Rescue Soldier Market," held monthly, providing a sensory experience of the nostalgic life in a military village.
