Mangrove Conservation Area Introduction
Mangroves are salt-tolerant plants that grow at the intersection of sea and river. Currently, there are four species of mangroves remaining in Taiwan: Avicennia marina, Kandelia obovata, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, and Sonneratia caseolaris. From the coastal area of Tainan City, starting at the mouth of the Bajhang River and extending south to the mouth of the Zengwen River, the coastal region experiences relatively small waves, with many floating swamps, lakes, and estuarine marshlands. Sediments accumulate at the estuary and coastal areas, creating good places for mangroves to take root and thrive. They are distributed in Beimen District, growing in the shallow swamp mud at the mouth of the Jishui River, with species such as Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Avicennia marina; in Jiangjun District, growing at the mouth of the Jiangjun River, with species such as Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorhiza; and in Qigu District, growing in muddy areas of the Zengwen River estuary, with scattered areas of about five hectares of Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Kandelia obovata. The mangroves are rich in minerals and organic matter, making them a paradise for mudskippers and fiddler crabs. The city government will continue to manually restore and plant mangroves each year, hoping to create the most natural ecological environment in the southern coastal area with this national treasure of mangroves.
