Baogong Temple Introduction

Built in the eleventh year of the Xianfeng era (1861), it is located in the Right YIngpu of the East Anfang, which was the administrative center at that time, and is the ancestral hall of the Ch'an (Zen) sect. Initially constructed as a simple grass hut, it was renovated in the fifth year of the Tongzhi era (1866). In the twelfth year of the Guangxu era (1888), believers gathered funds to permanently rebuild it, converting it into a temple made of tiles and stones. In the twenty-ninth year of the Meiji era (1896), the Japanese requisitioned the Bao'en Temple to transform it into Tainan Hospital. The responsible person, Zheng Liangmo, utilized the compensation and donations from believers to relocate the temple to its current site. The Tainan Bao'en Temple is known as "the most beautiful traditional wooden building in Tainan."
