Remains of the South Gate Section of the Tainan Fort City Walls Introduction
The remains of the South Gate section of the Tainan City Fortifications are located on Shulin Street in Tainan City. The outer face faces Shulin Street, while the back borders Tainan Female Senior High School, becoming part of its wall. The South Gate section has been restored using traditional methods, largely returning it to its old appearance. Furthermore, a segment revealing its internal structure has been preserved for public viewing, making it invaluable. The current remains of the South Gate section run east-west and are about 80 meters long and over 4 meters high, representing one of the better-preserved segments. Its appearance clearly indicates it was constructed using rammed earth in traditional methods. Given that the city walls are almost entirely invisible within Tainan, it is indeed very rare to have such a complete section of the wall preserved.
