Anping Oyster Shell Mound Cultural Museum Introduction
The Oyster Shell Kiln was once an important building material manufacturing site in the Anping area and is currently the only remaining oyster shell kiln in Taiwan. Since the 17th century, oyster shell has been one of the essential shipbuilding materials for the people of Anping, who relied on the sea for their livelihood. Later, it was mixed with sugar water and glutinous rice juice to become a bonding agent for tiles used in house construction. Nowadays, although these ancient building materials are no longer in use, the site still preserves the significant heritage of Anping's oyster shell processing. Entering the Oyster Shell Kiln, one can see red brick walls covered with creeping plants, and inside is a large kiln pit that is approximately 4 meters in diameter and about 2 meters in height, with the thinnest part of the kiln wall being 1 meter thick. It is a rare example of kiln architecture.
