Xiaolin Village Memorial Park Introduction

In the early morning of August 9, 2009, the strong winds and rains of Typhoon Morakot caused landslides at Xiantou Mountain, burying Xiaolin Village in the Jiasian District and shocking the nation with the devastating disaster. To commemorate the 462 villagers who perished in the disaster, the Kaohsiung City Government established the Xiaolin Village Memorial Park on elevated land south of the original site of Xiaolin Village, which was completed and opened in 2012. Covering an area of 1.7 hectares, 80% of the park is designated as greenery, recreating the image of the former Xiaolin Village. The names of the 462 deceased are inscribed on both sides of the park's path, while 181 native Taiwanese mountain cherry saplings represent the 181 families lost. The park also features a remembrance square, Xiaolin Public Shrine, lookout pavilion, and monument. The nine-meter tall monument is built from stones that flowed down from Xiantou Mountain during the disaster, symbolizing the strength for renewal and rebuilding for the villagers. Looking out from the memorial park towards the site evokes a reflection on the merciless power of nature, fostering a deeper appreciation for the present and a sense of humility.
