Xiaolin Village Memorial Park Introduction
In the early hours of August 9, 2009, the strong winds and rain from Typhoon Morakot caused landslides on Xian Du Mountain, burying Xiao Lin Village in the Jiasian District and shocking the entire nation with the severe disaster. To commemorate and remember the 462 villagers of Xiao Lin Village who were buried, the Kaohsiung City Government established the Xiao Lin Village Memorial Park in the highland south of the original site of Xiao Lin Village, which was completed and opened in 2012. The park covers an area of 1.7 hectares, with 80% planned as green space, recreating the imagery of the former Xiao Lin Village. The names of the 462 deceased are engraved on both sides of the苦路, and 181 native Taiwanese mountain cherry saplings represent the 181 families that were lost. The park also features a remembrance square, the Xiao Lin Shrine, an observatory, and a memorial monument. The nine-meter-tall monument is constructed from stones washed down from Xian Du Mountain during the storm, symbolizing the strength for rebirth and rebuilding for the villagers. Looking out from the memorial park towards the remains of the village serves as a reminder of the ruthless power of nature, prompting a deeper appreciation for the present and fostering humility.
