Dadaocheng Quarter - Dihua Street Shops Introduction
In the past, there were no embankments along the Tamsui River, and Guidé Street extended directly to the river. Goods from the mainland arrived by ferry and were unloaded, then displayed and sold on Dihua Street behind Guidé Street. Many merchants on Dihua Street became incredibly wealthy through trade, and they built particularly beautiful houses. These houses were designed with verandas to adapt to Taiwan's rainy weather, yet their exterior walls often featured Western-style decorations, creating a unique blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles. The most notable characteristic of these old shop houses is their narrow, deep layout, with the front serving as a shop and the back functioning as a factory or warehouse, showcasing the features of early clustered street houses. The most famous street in Dadaocheng is Dihua Street, where various shops sell all kinds of dried goods, Chinese medicinal herbs, and woven products, making it an important street for New Year shopping. There are also many designated historic sites, such as Xiahai City God Temple, Cisheng Temple, Gu Residence, and newfangled Spring Tea House, which preserve traces of history and are worth visiting. Additionally, the Dadaocheng Wharf features a container market offering various delicacies, allowing visitors to enjoy great food while soaking in beautiful views and sunsets. Regular events and performances are held here as well. Today, Dadaocheng still retains traditional architecture, with red brick houses and retro streets, creating a tapestry of old and new alongside newly constructed buildings. On weekends, it’s a good idea to stroll through Dadaocheng, rent a set of traditional clothing, and immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere.
