Xingtian Temple Beitou Branch - Zhongyi Temple Introduction
Xingtian Temple Beitou Branch, commonly known as "Zhongyi Temple," is dedicated to the deity Guansheng Dijun. It is located at No. 50, Lane 18, Section 4, Zhongyang North Road, Beitou District, Taipei City. This branch temple of Xingtian Temple, which has a flourishing incense offering on Mingquan East Road in Taipei, actually has an earlier history than the main temple in Taipei. The names of the original Taiwan Railway "Zhongyi Station" and the current MRT "Zhongyi Station" were derived from its proximity to "Zhongyi Temple." The "Guandi Temple Xingtian Temple," also known historically as the "Jioutai Street Enzhu Gong Temple," was originally situated near the current Xinsheng Junior High School in Zhongshan District, Taipei City. Due to the booming incense offerings at "Guandi Temple Xingtian Temple," it had to actively seek a new site for relocation when the original temple land was designated for school use. Eventually, in the 36th year of the Republic of China (1946), a suitable site was found in Beitou, at the present-day Zhongyi Mountain (formerly known as "Halaobio"). The construction was financially supported by Master Xuankong, one of the builders of Xingtian Temple, and the temple was completed on May 31, 1965, showcasing a grand design featuring three main halls. The temple area covers approximately 8 hectares, with majestic architecture and a library. The surrounding greenery is rich in natural ecology, with well-planned pathways, gardens, rest pavilions, parking areas, and public restrooms, serving as the starting point for the Zhongyi Mountain Hiking Trail planned by the city government. Ascending the steps from the foot of the mountain, visitors are first greeted by a vast expanse of lush green grass, garden landscaping, and a coconut palm boulevard. Continuing upward through the Sun and Moon Gate leads to the spacious front hall of the Beitou Branch Temple. The temple courtyard is very spacious, where the red walls and gray stone floor create a harmonious atmosphere under the blue sky. Passing through the mountain gate, one can see the elegant Yu Huang Pavilion and the Bell and Drum Tower, showcasing the beauty of grand architecture. After paying respects at the Yu Huang Pavilion, the rear hall, and the San Yuan Hall, heading towards the back mountain offers a serene encounter with nature’s beauty. Strolling along the shaded paths lined with dense trees, gazing at the towering bamboos, or admiring the weathered strange rocks enhances the tranquil scenery. Climbing the Baibai Steps on the right side provides a panoramic view of the Guandu Plain and the Tamsui River, offering a broad and refreshing vista, making it an ideal spot for visiting the Beitao-Dan line and calming one’s mind.
