Xingtian Temple Beitou Branch - Zhongyi Temple Introduction

Xingtian Temple Beitou Branch, commonly known as "Zhongyi Temple," is dedicated to the worship of Guandi (Emperor Guan). It is located at No. 50, Lane 18, Section 4, Zhongyang North Road, Beitou District, Taipei City. This branch temple, known for its vibrant religious activities, is a subsidiary of the bustling Xingtian Temple on Minquan East Road in Taipei, yet its history predates the main temple. The original names of the Taiwan Railway station "Zhongyi Station" and the current MRT "Zhongyi Station" were derived from its proximity to the Zhongyi Temple. "Guandi Temple Xingtian Temple," once known as the "Jiutai Street Enzuguang Temple" by devotees, was originally located near the XinXing Junior High School in today’s Zhongshan District, Taipei City. With the growing popularity of Xingtian Temple, the original temple site was reallocated for school use, prompting the temple management to actively seek a new location for relocation. Eventually, in the 45th year of the Republic of China (1956), they found a good site for building a temple at Baitou Bie (now known as Zhongyi Mountain). The construction was funded by Master Xuankong, the builder of the three halls of Xingtian Temple, and was completed on May 31, 1965, showcasing a large temple layout with three halls. The Beitou Xingtian Temple complex covers approximately 8 hectares, featuring imposing temple architecture. In addition to a library, the area is rich in greenery and natural ecosystems, well-planned pathways, landscaped gardens, resting pavilions, parking lots, and public restrooms. It serves as the starting point for the city government's planned Zhongyi Mountain Trail, which leads to the nearby mountains. Ascending the steps from the foot of the mountain, you are first greeted by a vast expanse of green grass, landscaped gardens, and an avenue lined with coconut trees. Continuing upward, you pass through the Sun and Moon Gate, arriving at the spacious front hall of the Beitou branch temple. The temple courtyard is very spacious, with a harmonious atmosphere created by the red walls and gray stone pavement under the blue sky. Through the mountain gate, you can see the elegant Jade Emperor Hall and the bell and drum tower, showcasing the beauty of grand architecture. After paying respects at the Jade Emperor Hall, the rear hall, and the San Yuan Hall, you can head towards the back mountain to enjoy a peaceful natural beauty. A stroll along the shaded pathways lined with lush trees allows you to gaze up at the dense bamboo or stare at the weathered rock formations, enhancing your appreciation of the tranquil scenery. Additionally, climbing the 800 steps on the right side offers a panoramic view of the Guandu Plain and the Tamsui River, providing a wide and refreshing perspective, making it one of the best spots for a day out in the Beitou District and a place to rejuvenate your spirit.
