Dadaocheng Theater Introduction
Dadaocheng Theatre is located on the 8th and 9th floors of Yongle Market. Originally a garden before 1908, it was transformed into a market during the Japanese occupation, once gathering nearly a thousand fabric shops, making it the largest fabric center in Taiwan. Dadaocheng is also known as the cradle of traditional performing arts, earning the nickname "Theatre Cave". The purpose of Dadaocheng Theatre is to perform, promote, and preserve traditional performing arts. The 9th-floor theater hosts various traditional performances, such as Taiwanese opera, Peking opera, Nanguan, Beiguan, Hakka opera, and storytelling, while the 8th-floor performance area plans regular puppet shows, Nanguan, and storytelling programs. The ground floor plaza arranges arts and cultural activities called "Play in Theatre." The theatre offers cultural and arts workshops on traditional performing arts, tea arts, and fabric arts during the spring and autumn seasons, alongside free cultural lectures and screenings of performing arts films. The exhibition area on the 8th-floor corridor features a permanent puppet exhibition and occasional special exhibitions, with guided tour services available for groups of ten or more. Various rehearsal rooms and multifunctional briefing rooms are also available for rental by arts organizations. Additionally, plans are in place for campus outreach performances, arts education programs at schools, and training and performances for a youth Taiwanese opera troupe, aiming to pass on traditional performing arts and cultivate young talents.
