Li Chunsheng Memorial Church Introduction

The famous Dadaocheng businessman Li Chunsheng is a legendary figure in Dadaocheng, who became wealthy by starting as a compradore in foreign trade. He helped British merchants manage the tea production and sales in northern Taiwan, achieving significant success, and is known as the "Father of Taiwanese Tea." He was a pioneer in exporting Taiwan's tea to Europe and America. As a Christian and a well-known local businessman, he often mediated and resolved disputes between foreign merchants and local residents, ensuring matters ended amicably. He was also known for his philanthropic efforts and played a significant role in modern development during Liu Mingchuan's promotion of modernization. The Li Chunsheng Memorial Church, funded by later generations, was built to honor this immortal businessman. This two-story building is located on Guidede Street, which was an area for foreigners during the late Qing Dynasty, where wealthy merchants and foreign firms gathered, making it the most prosperous street in Dadaocheng. Because it is situated by the Tamsui River, where flooding occurs frequently, the foundations of the buildings here are higher than average. Although the exterior surface tiles of the building have been renovated, its frontal features are well-preserved. It resembles a human face, with the entrance as the mouth and two round windows as the eyes. This architectural style is unique to Taipei City and is quite distinctive.
