Li Chunsheng Memorial Church Introduction

The famous businessman Li Chun-sheng from Dadaocheng became wealthy through his work as a comprador in foreign trade, becoming a legendary figure in Dadaocheng. He assisted British merchants in the management of tea production and sales in northern Taiwan, achieving great success and earning the title "Father of Taiwanese Tea." He was a pioneer in exporting Taiwanese tea to Europe and America. Being a Christian and a prominent local businessman, he often intervened to resolve disputes between foreign merchants and local residents, ensuring a harmonious conclusion to many issues. Known for his charitable nature and commitment to public welfare, he enjoyed a high reputation among the locals. Additionally, he made significant contributions during Liu Ming-chuan's push for modernization. The Li Chun-sheng Memorial Church, built by later generations in his honor, commemorates this remarkable businessman. This two-story building is located on Guide Street, which was an area where foreigners resided during the late Qing Dynasty, bustling with wealthy merchants and foreign trade houses, making it the most prosperous part of Dadaocheng. Due to frequent flooding from the Tamsui River, the foundations of the houses here are higher than usual. Although the external facade of the building has been renovated, its main features remain well-preserved, resembling a human face with the entrance as the mouth and two bay windows as the eyes. This architectural style is unique to Taipei and is quite distinctive.
