Li Chunsheng Memorial Church Introduction

The famous businessman Li Chunsheng from Dadaocheng, a legendary figure who became wealthy through his work as a compradore in foreign trade, played a significant role in the tea industry of northern Taiwan. He assisted British companies in the production and sale of Taiwanese tea, achieving remarkable success, and is known as the "Father of Taiwanese Tea." He was a pioneer in exporting Taiwanese tea to Europe and America. As a Christian and a well-known wealthy merchant, he often mediated and resolved disputes between foreign businesses and local residents, ensuring satisfactory outcomes. He was also generous and actively involved in public welfare, earning high esteem among the local community. Furthermore, he made significant contributions during Liu Ming-chuan's modernization efforts. The Li Chunsheng Memorial Church, funded by later generations, was built to honor this immortal businessman. This two-story building is located on Guide Street, an area that was home to foreigners during the late Qing Dynasty, where wealthy merchants and foreign firms gathered, making it the most prosperous neighborhood in Dadaocheng. Because it is situated by the Tamsui River, which frequently floods, the foundations of the buildings here are higher than usual. Although the exterior tiles have been refurbished, the front features remain relatively intact, resembling a human face, with the entrance as the mouth and two cow ear windows as the eyes. This architectural style is unique to Taipei City and is quite distinctive.
