Li Chunsheng Memorial Church Introduction
The famous wealthy businessman Li Chunsheng from Dadaocheng is a legendary figure who became rich by starting as a compradore for foreign trading companies. He assisted British firms in managing tea production and sales in northern Taiwan with remarkable success, earning the title "Father of Taiwan Tea" and becoming a pioneer in exporting Taiwan tea to Europe and America. A Christian and a well-known local tycoon, he often mediated and resolved disputes between foreign merchants and local residents, bringing closure to various issues and earning great respect within the community for his charitable deeds and enthusiasm for public welfare. Additionally, he made significant contributions during Liu Mingchuan's modernization efforts. The Li Chunsheng Memorial Church, built by later generations, is dedicated to commemorating this immortal businessman. This two-story building is located on Guide Street, which was a residential area for foreigners during the late Qing Dynasty, bustling with wealthy merchants and trading companies. Being near the Tamsui River, the foundations of buildings here are higher than usual due to frequent flooding. Although the external bricks of the building have been renovated, its front features are relatively well preserved, reminiscent of a human face, with the entrance resembling a mouth and the two cow ear windows resembling eyes. This architectural style is unique to Taipei City and quite distinctive.
