Wuqii Cultural Office Introduction
Located in Wuchi District, adjacent to Wuchi Old Street and the Wenhua Road commercial area, the "Original Wuchi Police Substation and Dormitory Group," designated as a municipal historic site, officially opened to the public under the name "Wuchi Cultural Branch" on March 28, 2021. This nearly 90-year-old historic site witnessed the complete system of police office and dormitory structures from the Japanese colonial period to the Nationalist government era, as well as the rise and fall of Wuchi Harbor Street. Recently, it introduced "Taiwan's First Historic Site Hostel," offering tourists a more diverse experience of unique Japanese-Taiwanese culture. The Wuchi Cultural Branch, located at the heart of Wuchi Old Street, is next to the Wenhua Road commercial area and the century-old Chaoyuan Temple. With the core concept of "reviving an old street with an old building," it employs the sentiment of "telling stories through old buildings and old streets" to connect cultural elements related to the harbor street, and plans a series of preservation activities, cultural education promotions, and reuse programs. It aims to jointly rejuvenate the old street with local residents, showcasing the irreplaceable charm of the century-old harbor street in Wuchi. The "Original Wuchi Police Substation and Dormitory Group" was constructed in the sixth year of the Showa era (1931) and was announced as a designated county historic site on November 8, 2010 (and later as a municipal historic site after the merger of counties and cities). It is one of the few historic sites in Taiwan that retains both substation and dormitory structures. The site includes the combined police substation and dormitory, double-brick dormitories, single-unit wooden dormitories, single-unit brick dormitories, and an air raid shelter. The current address is No. 142 Wuchi Road, built in the sixth year of Showa (1931). Among the existing buildings, only the "Combined Police Substation and Dormitory (Building A)" experienced the Dungzikou earthquake in Showa 10 (1935), while the others were built after the earthquake. In addition to guided tours, special exhibitions on harbor street culture, and art exhibitions, the site plans to offer experiences such as kimono wearing, wishing plaque painting at the prayer pavilion, and fortune poetry strips as various Japanese cultural experiences. Notably, the Wuchi Cultural Branch is also the first legal historic site hostel in Taiwan, allowing visitors to personally experience daily life within a unique Japanese historic site, savoring the cultural charm of the heritage.
