Wuqiyuan Cultural Center Introduction
Located in Wuchi District, adjacent to Wuchi Old Street and the Cultural Road business district, the "Designated Historic Site Former Wuchi Police Station and Dormitory" officially opened to the public on March 28, 2021, under the name "Wuchi Cultural Outreach Station." This historic site, which spans nearly 90 years, witnesses the comprehensive structure of the police administrative system from the Japanese colonial period to the Kuomintang government period, as well as the rise and fall of Wuchi Port Street. Recently, it has launched "Taiwan's First Historic Site Homestay," allowing visitors to experience unique aspects of Japanese culture in Taiwan. Wuchi Cultural Outreach Station is located in the center of Wuchi Old Street, next to the Cultural Road business district and the century-old Chaoyuan Temple. Its core philosophy is "One old house, revitalizing an old street." By utilizing the concept of "old houses and old streets telling stories," it connects cultural elements related to the port street and plans a series of activities for historic site preservation, cultural education, and reuse, hoping to revitalize the old street in collaboration with local residents and to showcase the irreplaceable charm of Wuchi Old Street, a historic port street. The "Designated Historic Site Former Wuchi Police Station and Dormitory" was built in 1931 (the 6th year of the Showa era) and was officially designated as a county historic site on November 8, 2010 (it is now a city historic site after the merger of county and city). It is one of the few historic sites in Taiwan that retains both a police station and a dormitory. The site includes the police station and dormitory combined structure, double brick dormitories, single wooden dormitories, single brick dormitories, and an air raid shelter. The current address is No. 142 Wuchi Road, with the existing building body, only "Police Station and Dormitory Combined Structure (Building A)" having experienced the Dungzikiao Earthquake in 1935 during the Japanese colonial period; the remaining buildings were constructed after the earthquake. The site plans to offer not only guided tours, exhibitions of the port street culture and artworks, but also various Japanese cultural experiences such as kimono experiences, ema wishes at a prayer pavilion, and fortune poems. Notably, Wuchi Cultural Outreach Station is also Taiwan's first legally recognized historic site homestay, where the public can personally experience a day's life and enjoyment within a special Japanese historic site while savoring its rich cultural heritage.
