Wuchi Cultural Station Introduction
Located in Wuchi District, adjacent to Wuchi Old Street and the Cultural Road commercial area, the "Former Wuchi Police Station and Dormitory Group," designated as a municipal historic site, officially opened to the public as the "Wuchi Cultural Outreach Office" on March 28, 2021. This nearly 90-year-old historical site witnesses the complete police administrative system and police station setup from the Japanese colonial period to the Kuomintang government era, as well as the rise and fall of Wuchi Port Street. Recently, it has also launched "Taiwan's First Historic Site Homestay," allowing visitors to experience unique aspects of Taiwanese-Japanese culture. The Wuchi Cultural Outreach Office, situated at the heart of Wuchi Old Street, is adjacent to the Cultural Road commercial area and the century-old Chaoyuan Temple. With the concept of "reviving an old street through an old building," it connects cultural elements related to the port street through storytelling and plans a series of historic preservation, cultural education promotion, and reutilization activities, aiming to rejuvenate the old street together with local residents and unleash the irreplaceable charm of the century-old port street. The "Former Wuchi Police Station and Dormitory Group" was built in the 6th year of the Showa era (1931) and was officially designated as a county historic site on November 8, 2010 (later designated as a municipal historic site after the merger of the county and city). It is one of the few historic sites in Taiwan that retains both the station office and the dormitory complex. The grounds include the station office combined with dormitories, double-brick dormitories, single wooden dormitories, single-brick dormitories, and air-raid shelters. The current address is No. 142 Wuchi Road, built in the 6th year of the Showa era (1931). Among the existing buildings, only the "Station Office and Dormitory (Building A)" experienced the Dungzikou earthquake in the 10th year of Showa (1935), while the other buildings were constructed after the earthquake. In addition to guided tours, port street cultural exhibitions, and art exhibitions, the site plans to offer various Japanese cultural experiences, including kimono experiences, ema for blessings, and fortune poetry slips. Notably, the Wuchi Cultural Outreach Office is also the first legally recognized historic site homestay in Taiwan, allowing the public to personally experience life in a unique historic Japanese site and savor the cultural elegance of the heritage.
