Zhuan’an River Estuary Introduction
The Zhuan'an River Estuary Wetland covers a vast area, featuring habitats that include rice paddies, fish ponds, and freshwater marshes. This has led to a thriving aquaculture industry, primarily focused on species such as conch, eel, and grass shrimp. The expansive, diverse, and tranquil wetland environment, combined with the abundant fish and shrimp brought in by the tides, makes it a hidden habitat for various bird species. During the autumn and winter, when migratory birds head south, thousands of waterfowl pass through, stopping here to rest or winter. You can observe the elegant sight of waterbirds foraging gracefully and enjoy the beautiful reflections of layered mountains on the water’s surface, making it a private spot for birdwatching. However, in recent years, the ecosystem has changed, and the bird population is not as thriving as it once was, prompting reflections on the importance of cherishing nature. Additionally, the sandy beach at the mouth of the Zhuan'an River offers not only birdwatching and scenic views but also the opportunity to witness traditional folk activities of Yilan, known as "Qian Gu." This refers to the practice where fishermen use bamboo rafts to draw nets along the coast during fish runs, gathering schools of fish within the nets, and then working together to pull the catch ashore. Everyone who participates in the Qian Gu activity shares in the catch. Moreover, this location is also a great spot to enjoy sunrises; in the early morning, as the sun rises, the warm yellow light reflects off the river, attracting many photographers who come to capture this serene beauty.
