Zhuyan River Estuary Introduction
The Zhuan'an River Estuary wetland covers a vast area, with habitats including rice fields, fish farms, and freshwater marshes. As a result, aquaculture is thriving here, primarily focusing on sea cucumber, eel, and grass shrimp. The expansive and diverse tranquil wetland environment, combined with the influx of fish and shrimp brought in by the tides, makes this area a secluded habitat for birds. During autumn and winter, when migratory birds head south, various kinds of waterbirds, numbering in the thousands, stop here to rest or spend the winter. You can observe the elegant sight of waterbirds foraging and the beautiful reflections of layered mountains on the water's surface, making it a hidden gem for birdwatching. However, in recent years, the ecological system has changed, and the bird population is not as abundant as it once was, prompting reflection on the importance of cherishing nature. Additionally, the sandy beach at the mouth of the Zhuan'an River not only offers birdwatching and scenic views but also showcases traditional Yilan folk activities—net fishing. Net fishing involves fishermen using bamboo rafts to pull nets and encircle fish schools along the coast, after which people on the shore work together to pull the catch onto the land, and those participating in the activity share in the catch. This location is also a great spot to enjoy the sunrise; in the early morning, as the sun rises, warm yellow sunlight reflects off the river's surface, attracting many photographers who come to capture this quiet beauty.
