Dadan Island Introduction
According to the notice from the Army's Kinmen Defense Command, the project will execute special tasks from July 9 to 18 and on July 26, 2025, resulting in the temporary suspension of access to Dadan Island during this period. Dadan Island is part of Lieyu Township in Kinmen County and requires a boat ride to reach after arriving in Little Kinmen. Known as "a secret within a battlefield's secret," it is only 4,400 meters away from Xiamen, and during the era of military confrontation between the two sides, it was regarded as the frontline of the front lines. Dadan Island is small and flat, and after years of renovations, it officially unveiled its beauty to tourists in 2019, allowing visitors to explore the island's past. The Dadan Wharf features large slogans stating "Dadan shouldering Dadan, the island is lonely but the person is not alone" and "Loyalty penetrating the sun and moon, bravely shaking mountains and rivers," invoking a sense of reverence as one steps onto Dadan Island. Shengming Road, approximately 500 meters long, has pairs of mud lion sculptures standing on both sides, totaling 212 pairs or 636 lions (males, females, plus cubs), while the entire Dadan Island has a total of 491 pairs or 1,473 cement lions. Beishan Temple, located next to the Divine Chicken Tomb, is dedicated to the Emperor Xuantian of the North, a statue that drifted to the island and was collected by officers who built a temple for him. The wall of the temple is inscribed with "A mountain does not need to be high; it becomes famous with a deity; a temple does not need to be large; it becomes spiritual with sincerity," serving as a spiritual support for the stationed soldiers. The most famous site on Dadan Island is the Psychological Warfare Wall! Built in 1986, this massive wall is 3.2 meters high and 20 meters long, displaying military slogans, making it a popular attraction for mainland tourists visiting Xiamen. From the nearby observatory, visitors can use telescopes to see tourists on the opposite side cruising along the coastline. The Beishan National Flag Platform, originally a speaker fort for the Dadan Broadcasting Station, is the best location for viewing Xiamen from Dadan Island, providing a panoramic view from Dadan Two, Three, Four, and Five to Zhangzhou. The Dadan Broadcasting Station was established by the Great Wall troops in the 1950s and expanded in 1969, with sound waves reaching up to 20,000 meters. Continuing along the trail, visitors will find broadcasting horns similar to those at the Beishan Broadcasting Wall, with the highest point being the Beishan National Flag Platform, which offers excellent views. The Dadan Holy Spring is said to be the "spring of life" for the garrison on the island, believed to have emerged when Zheng Chenggong plunged his sword into the ground; hence the name Holy Spring. There are five taboos associated with the Holy Spring: no slaughtering, showering, hairstyling, collecting water from the well's edge, or using well water for washing clothes and watering plants. Additionally, there are rumors that women approaching the Holy Spring may diminish their fortune, leading guides to often caution against this. The Holy Spring Tea House, constructed in 1991 using the island's abundant Casuarina wood, serves as an important leisure venue on the island and a place to host visiting dignitaries.
